Who's the best TV mom?

Who do you think the best TV mom is and why? I'm talking about in TV family shows like: The Cosby Show, Family Matters, Home Improvement, Roseanne, ect. For me it's Clair (Phylicia Rashad) in The Cosby Show. When I was little watching that show I knew that is exactly the kind of woman and mother I wanted to be. She was confident, graceful, funny, smart, succesful, coy, and she knew just how to get what she wanted from her children. She was in love with her husband and was his rock. I think she defines the perfect mother - at least for me she does.

I really had to think on this one. There have been many, many mothers on TV over the years and some have been wonderful but not always realistic. I think for me the best would be realistic, Roseanne did come to mind but then I thought of Grace from "Grace Under Fire". She was a great mother figure. She got herself out of an abusive releationship, she was a recovering alchoholic who admitted to her problems and fought hard to not to go back to them. She also worked hard to better her life for herself and her kids. She went back to school to try and do this. She could be very sarcastic but she loved her kids and would do anything for them. She was very loyal to her friends. She had some problems with her family but even that she managed to work through and make it better. She took what life gave her, wasn't satisfied with it and instead of hiding or whining about it she did what she had to in order to make it better. I think that is a great mother model.

I think so too. I use to love watching that show. You're so right she is a great mother model by overcoming so much and still able to smile.

Okay, I have watched Grace in Grace Under Fire and have seen superb tv mom acting, the role model she exemplifies is strong, resilient, and of course graceful. Good choice, but I feel Shirley Renfrew Partridge, widowed mother of five, back in 1970 had so much to offer from the 'single' parenting perspective. She persevered in teaching her children to follow their dreams, listen to their voices awakened by a society ever-changing, providing them with unconditional love like no other tv mom represented nearly as well. The Partridge Family, in an effort to educate the social graces on parenting without male dominance, shows relying on the self without the 'male element' does not lose but rather gains for many socioeconomic reasons.

Clair Huxtible was definitely a momma to look up to, nice pick ; ) My faves have already been named... I always wished I was like Samantha but I really related to Grace, Judy and Roseanne because I have a sarcastic way about my own mothering. Have you seen Still Standing? It was a short-lived family situation comedy that airs repeats now. The tv mom, Judy, was an updated version of Grace or Roseanne. I'm a lot mushier and lovey than those tv moms but I loved the realism in those shows!

I absolutely love Roseanne. I like her because she acts and treats her children like a real mom does. They endure real family problems and it isn't just a serene "happy ending" story always. Many families can relate to that as being similar to their own. I wish my mom was more like her :).

Oh, don't get me wrong, i love Claire too, and as a kid thought "what a cool household to live in!" Watching Roseanne as a kid, I surely never thought Roseanne's house was a good one to live in (fantasizing of living with tv families). Her household was too similar and her family had was too dysfunctional a lot like mine! But looking back, and watching all the re-runs as I was an adult, I really appreciated that show for its reality base with the humor that was thrown in the mix.

That is true. She is a little more realistic. I think though that's why I like Clair more. I would strive to be better than 'average' and be somewhat story book for my kids. I do love that show though :)

Well I would want Samantha from Bewitched to be my tv mom. Could you imagine the fun you could have? When I was growing up, that's who I wanted for a mom. She really was the perfect housewife in those days. Clean house , dinner on the table and always looked so perfect. She sure stood up for her husband. I know that was all fantasty, but that's a kid world isn't it.

She also stood up to her husband on a few occassions as well :). She didn't back down from anything really and had a lot of backbone. She wasn't your typical stay at home mother even without being a witch.

LOL - me too. Those are all really great shows, with really great moms. I think my second pick would be Jill from Home Improvement.

I have to agree with the poster who said Grace from Grace Under Fire (that was such a great show!) and next in line would be Morticia Adams LOL as a mom myself I'm pretty much a combination of the two of them :-D

I agree with you. She was impressive and they had a great thing when she was Mrs. Ungawa. Smart, working, mother of truly a handful of children. Rudy was a treasure. They had fun and dealt with problems well. Great examples of what all of us could strive for.

I Love Lucy? I loved the show but she rarely had the baby on it. Once he got older he was on more. Do you have reasons that you choose the others?
