I am from India. Please don't misunderstand me!It has been observed by me that when two educated people who can talk in English meet, then they try to talk in English, though their native language is not English, in India. I really don't understand when they do have their own language in which they can converse and they can express themselves in a better way, then why they need to talk in English? Is the situation same in other non - native English Countries, like Spain, france, Italy, Germany , China, Japan etc.? I am curious to know about it? Please share your observations....Thanks!

Filipinos do the same. But there is a reason why. People from Thailand or even Malaysia look just like Filipinos. If a Filipino came across a similar looking person but not sure if the person is Filipino, so we ask where they are from in English. Also, Philippines has several dialects spoken in every island. I have never known 1 Filipino who can speak all the dialects.

I'm Indonesian living in Aberdeen, Scotland.. Technicaly I have to speak english all the time because I'm in english speaking country. But because I want to teach my son my language I've been speaking Indonesian to him since he was a baby and up until now I still speak Indonesian to him.And I'm glad I've done that because now that he's two he can speak Indonesian and English perfectly. I do have the same question as you sometime when I met Indonesian people who actulay doesn't want to speak Indonesian anymore. I just can't understand why they do that...xx

It is certainly not the same here in Israel... We speak mostly Hebrew, and when people have any task in English - they try to avoid it as possible... just because of the reasons you just mentioned - they can express themselves better...
