Single people buying double beds

Here in New Zealand it's been the trend for some time for single people to buy double beds, especially young people going into flats. When I was young we'd have wondered why you needed all that room to sleep in, and why you'd want to clutter up your bedroom with a large bed. What do you think of this trend?

for young single ppl just getting their first flat, a double bed can be a sign of "growing up" and im sure the thought of potential overnight visitors (wink) are figured into the decision. for me at least..i had a boyfriend and its incredibly uncomfortable for 2 ppl to try and sleep in a single bed! lol

I know about two people sleeping in a single bed: my wife and I used to do that occasionally when she worked overnight at a children's care home. But do you think every young person goes out flatting with the aim of having enough room for someone else?

no, not necessarily. but a double bed can certainly be considered a sign of "growing up". just about everybodies parents slept in at least a double bed. part of the "getting out on your own" for the first time is having those grown up things. a bigger bed, your own dishes, a sofa or couch instead of just a couple of chairs. all the things that mature ppl have in their homes. bigger bed is simply a part of it.

I'm not a good one to ask about that. I LOVE my King Size Bed and wouldn't know what to do without it. When I stay with friends and they have a double or queen size even, it feels so squished. Maybe I like a larger bed because I toss and turn, roll on my side and on my back throughout the night. I'd roll off the bed if it was smaller. :)

We slept in a normal size double bed for many years, and in the end the only problem was the bed sagging towards the middle too much. But this isn't a problem for a single person! LOL

We have a king sized bed too, these days, and my wife still complains that I take up more than my fair share.
