Theres lot of surplus or secondhand clothes here in the Philippines nowadays. It is mostly from US, Singapore and Hongkong. Do you have these thrift shops in your country too. Do you mind wearing them? Are they safe to use? If I will what could I possibly do to make it safe to use?

I dont mind wearing surplus clothes. Aside from being cheap, some are unique and you're assured that you wont wory gont out and see another person wearing same clothes.
whenever i buy clothes from "ukay-ukay", i wash it with laundry soap first and then with bathsoap such as safeguard. Sometimes I put hot water on it for about 10-15mins.

if the condition of the garment is good, it probably means it was not worn very much, or the previous owner took care of it.
in those cases, i really don't mind buying second-hand stuff. this is a cheap and fun way to redesign a boring wardrobe! and if you have any design talents, and can sew basic stitches, you can make some new creations from old clothes!
where i live there are many shops that do this and re-sell the clothing, (washed) for lots of money. there is even one store i know that makes gorgeous gowns and other styles that have things added or subtracted, like buttons, lace, trimming, etc....and i never saw anything in that store less than 50$...for something tiny like a tank top...it is a bit ridiculous, but on the other hand, the stuff they make IS really beautiful. you are sure to get something very original, because most of it is one of a kind, and hand-crafted. if i would pay 300$ for an evening gown, i might as well buy one that is REALLY special, and so what if it used to be somebody's old pair of jeans! :)

We dn't hav shops selling surplus or secondhand clothes over here in India. If thr had been such shop over here, i wudn't hav tried those stuff, as clothes in our country come very cheap an it wud be foolish to go for used clothes. But if u r getting good dtuff out thr at reasonable prices, thn go for, and wash them atleast 2 times before u try thm on. thts the best way to make them safe for use.

Well i live in Pakistan and we also have an entire market here which offers surplus or second hand clothes.
I have never tried buying any! i dont know why but it just doesnt seem very hygienic to me!
Since i have never tried surplus or second hand clothes myself i cant exactly comment on them being safe or not but i think a good washing with some good detergent might do the trick!

I won't mind wearning second hand clothes .
I don't see anything wrong with wearing secondhand things, so if a friend gives me something I can wear than I'm happy to accept. I also buy things in charity shops like someone has already mentioned. Not too long ago I heard a story on TV about a woman who had to buy two pairs of shoes every time she bought shoes because her feet were different sizes and she was looking for someone with a similar problem so as not to have to throw away the left over shoes.
Regarding safety .Wash them well for two three times.

I tried wearing clothes from the "ukay-ukay" and I don't mind buying from it. But I made sure that i washed it very well ( soaked it in soap and chlorox if applicable) before using it. Not all clothings from it are already used, some of it still has it's price tag.

When I was younger and much much poorer I made good use of thrift shops. Now that I can afford new clothes I don't use second-hand any more. If I had to again, I certainly would.
