I started a discussion tonight about swimming lessons. I also got to thinking about when I learned to rollerskate. I was very young and an older friend took me to the skating rink and just turned me loose. I fell on my rear the entire time I was there, but did eventually before I turned teenage learned to skate. My mom took my neice to the skating rink with some kids from church recently and said she did terribly. She hung on the rails all night and couldn't skate. How old were you and what were the best methods used to teach you to skate? I don't mean rollerblading, just regular roller skates. I want her to learn because it is great exercise and she is overweight and it is so much fun. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated :)

I learned on the side walk near my house. This was back in the day when kids played outside. I took it slow and I had friends my own age who could skate that helped me.After a month or two , we went to the skating rink.It took me a long while to learn to skate backwords.I learned how to skate backwords at the rink.I haven't skated in a long.long time. I hope it is like riding a bicycle.

Well I heard it is like riding a bike. But then I haven't been on a bike in years and years either....LOL. So I am afraid to try either one, at my age I could easily break something, or pull a muscle or any number of painful things! But oh what fun it would be. I wish I could go somewhere where "older" people skated, so I wouldn't feel so foolish if I were to go and find out I had lost the touch.

My dad is a pastor, and when I was 7 the church he was pastoring at the time built a school. For the gym, they used flooring that doubled as a floor for roller skating. I loved it! The school bought a bunch of roller skates on sale and when I had sleep overs my dad would open up the gym. I usually skated with a friend to avoid falling, because when I did, my back hurt for a week!

Oh what fun!! And wonderful memories too!! When my daughter went to 4 yr.old pre-school, it was at a church that used their gym floor for roller skating too, it was her first time to skate and the kids would hold hands I think and help each other out. I remember falling a lot and it hurting, but I'd get right back up and go for more.

lol.i went roller skateing not to long ago with my grand kids.an i havent been on roller skates since i was in my early20s.i thought i could roller skate again very easy but i just couldnt get my legs to move like they should.i ended up busting my butt an my grandkids help me get up an they were laughing their butt off at me lol.i think i need to learn all over again.the best way to learn is to let them hang on to the rail,an just turn them loose on the floor.or buy them a pair of skates to pratice at home.

I can but haven't done so in ages. I probably wouldn't be very good at it for a while. Would need to get back into it. I don't know exactly how to teach it though. Sorry.

Last night I bought rollers and today I was going to bring them to ride but the rain ruined my plans. We gathered mats and rollers give me the house, the dining room to the lobby and back. But I have great problems with the brakes, because after a few laps I saw traces of black rubber floor. Then I never put brakes .. I stopped with his hands on the wall ... and after a few laps I filled the walls with prints. Listen to a maximum of "90's dance mega-mix" (the music that I imagine they are on roller skates, shorts and shirt to the navel), and the neighbor below me beat me .... probably disturbed by noise barrel rolls on floor, because music is great .... and be heard clearly. I'm thinking to take a marker and draw something nice on a wall and then spread some mashed up here and there ... and ready. Now I expect someone to come to the door. If it's neighbor, stick a finger in his mouth and say no to me. If it's the police, out pen and sign the official report.
