I am trying to find out what cummins engine would be most suitable and most affordable for my 4x4 that I am building. It is a 1979 Cherokee Chief, I have to decide between a GMC 6.5 Diesel, which I have but needs re building, or sourcing a Cummins from a running truck.
Over here they can be found in various medium trucks such as DAF45 but the donuts that own them never seem to know what engine is in their rig so I will have to i.d it myself. The best I can hope for is that some of them know the size of their engine but don't know if it is a Cummins, so if they say they have a 5.9 130 engine I can be fairly sure it is a Cummins. (I blame the manufacturers not wanting purchasers to know that they out-source their power plants.)
I am finding it difficult to find a list of Cummins engines say from 1992 onwards and their model name, such as 130, 180 etc and what the power ratings are. I think I need a 1998 engine with the Bosch inline injection pump as opposed to the earlier rotary pump but I know this will be expensive so maybe an earlier engine would be ok if their was a choice of output and so long as it is turbo.
Can any one help me narrow down my search to a couple or three engines. My truck will be a daily driver with regular off road use though not extreme and will be used for towing. I will be coupling it too a NV4500 5 speed manual them a LT230 landrover gear driven transfer box and will be renning 33" tyres. Thanks for any input on this, Guy (based in the UK)
