What is with the wood chips?

I'm trying to figure out what is up with the new playground stations. Every town around here has one of these fancy playgrounds with bridges and nooks and crannies as well as standard equipment.
However, what is with the wood chips? I do appreciate the fact that they do make the park less nasty after rainy days or snow melt, but what about the splinters? I'm like YIKES! I wouldn't want to fall on that and get goodness knows how many in my skin. What do you think?

I think above all things, they make the park area smell nice. I don't think splinters are an option because they aren't rough like that. It absorbs the shock better than sand and it won't cause children to go to the ER with mass of sand in their eyes, ears, nose or mouth. Uuuuummmm...sad thing is, you can't make a woodchip castle like you can with sand. :(

I have actually gotten a splinter from the chips before, which is why I wondered about it. I do agree there are benefits to it.
Now if we can just find a wood that repels (instead of attracting) bees!

I agree, I don't like the wood chips. I remember when I was a little girl how they would have gravel and sand type stuff inside the playgrounds. Now its just wood chips, I just don't understand why they have them. I've gotten out and played with my son in these with bare feet, and its very uncomfortable. I really don't appreciate the splinters, and the uncomfortable feeling that these wood chips create. What were they thinking?
