Do dogs know 'self'?

My cocker spaniel responds to dogs on the television - he often growls and approaches the television until they go even if they were not making a noise (watching Crufts was very interesting!) So, if they do not recognise themselves why does he not bark at the dog in our full length mirror?

here's a strange one, my Greyhound loves to watch dogs on television and there was once a dog on TV that looked just like our other Greyhound we had at the time. he looked at the TV, bumped it with his nose, and stared at the other dog.
this Greyhound also really understands mirrors.
we used to have a mirror opposite the window, and a sofa below the window.
he would lie on the sofa and watch what happened outside in the mirror. if he saw someone he knew in the mirror he'd turn around to greet them.
