I'm one of those crazy people that lets their dogs lick the dishes. So there is never any food left on anything. I do rinse off the hair and stuff if that's there, otherwise we just put them in the dishwasher and let it do what it's supposed to. I figure the hot water in there will get rid of any dog saliva still hanging around.

I pre soak my dishes, then I wash them and then I rinse the glasses but I towel dry the rest of the dishes.

When we bought this house, it had a large dishwasher. There are only two of us, so it would be a waste to use it every day unless we have visitors. I usually use it every three days. Therefore, I wash the dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. On the third day I rinse any dishes that need it, but most go straight in.
I tend to think that one of the unhealthiest things is a tea towel, even if it is washed every day. A dishwasher not only sterilises but also negates using a tea towel. Many people say they haven't had colds in the house since having a dishwasher - or if they do, they don't tend to spread through the household.

When I did have a dishwasher I would always rinse my dishes before putting them in to be sterilized, actually...From what I understand, Cascade is suppose to do that for you but haven't been able to prove it as of yet. Perhaps one day I'll be able to let you know.

I'm the same way as you, I just rinse them off if there is a lot of food on them, or if it looks like something that might not come off all the way in the washer. My parents are the opposite though, they always freak out and rinse the dishes so well that they practically have them entirely cleaned before putting them in the dishwasher! lol I always tell them they're defeating the purpose of having a dishwasher!

I rinse my dishes off before putting them in the dishwater simply because it grosses me out to have food floating around in the water, I like to know my dishes are clean when I do the final rinse to dry and reuse again. My mother will wash her dishes before she puts them in the dishwasher. I prefer to rinse off the food and then let the dishwasher do it's thing, but I don't have one in my house yet so I still have to do it the old fashioned way :)
