Wild Cat Act

One of the most fun times when I was with the traveling Circus was the animal training/feeding. As previous discussions stated I traveled with carnivals/circuses as a runaway at 13 years old. When I first joined the Circus I was the cleaner of cages and baths and feeding person for the wild cats, elephants, camels ,horses, etc. I fed, bathed, cleaned cages of every animal there. It was a 15 hour a day job in itself. It was to this day the worst and filthiest job I had ever done in my life. But this discussion focuses on the aspect of the training of the animals. After a few months of doing the dirtiest job around I was asked to bring 2 of the Tigers to the arena after the afternoon show. I didn’t know why. But I found out the trainer wanted to teach me some basics about wild cats & the training of them. Now yes we did use a whip. But it never made contact with the animals unless by accident. We also used a starters pistol with blanks as a scare tactic in emergencies. Cats hate loud noises. That’s why the snap of a whip or a gun shot works so well in the training process. So as the cats roamed and circled the arena I was taught how to snap a whip correctly. I had many welts on my forearm & wrist from learning the correct snap method. Then after a couple days I was brought in to actually run the cats through a couple basic actions they already knew. I learned the correct hand signals & sounds to make them perform certain actions. The most basic is hand moving upward with the palm turned up. That’s to make the cats jump onto their pedestal, barrel etc. Then the circle motion for them to walk in a circle around the barrel. Then I was left with the newest addition a Black Leopard to train her for a future show. I was stunned/shocked to be able to do this on my own time etc. I put her through all the rigmarole of all aspects of training. She was a quick learner also. After a month I was brought in with the Black Leopard during an evening show. I had the semi-tux monkey suit and all on. Bowtie with top hat etc. I felt like a fool but loved the attention of the audience at the same time. I ran her through the basic actions of a circus cat. The jumping up on the barrel, the running around the entire arena. Also the jumping over of the tigers and lions. I was amazed yet scared to death if I was doing a good job. Then came the finale for me & my cat. I snapped the whip pointing to the ground near my feet. She slinked slowly like cats do lying down at my feet. I knelt down grabbing her chin then kissed her on the forehead. I stood and bowed to a loud roar from the audience. That wasn’t the last of my wild cat acts. But it was the most memorable for me. I performed with various cats for almost a year in about 15 different states and got the same loud roar and applause from the crowds. The owner loved my act as I threw in some things they didn’t teach me. As I was a very self empowered child at the time and taught the cats things they didn’t teach them. That’s it for this installment. Hope you enjoyed this little part of my life as the other 3 parts. Thanks for reading this and thanks in advance also for responses forth coming. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

You truly did this? How neat. I hate to ask why you had to leave your home at such a young age but I think your experience was wonderful and luckily you fared well from it from what I've read thus far! Very unique life indeed. Thanks for sharing!

I dreamed of joining a circus when I was a kid but didn't have the nerve to go thru with it. I'm sure with all the hard work, you had fun as well. Just imagine, your own leopard to train all by yourself. A black one at that. Bet she was a beautiful creature. I know how you felt when that whip snapped you instead of the air while you were learning to snap it. I've worn many a welts myself learning how to snap a 20' bull whip back when I was herding cattle/horses for the farmer that rented the land for pasture boarding. Sounds like you had a great time, although hard, being with the circus. -sighs- To be young again...

Thanks for shareing. That sounds like it was loads of fun. I would LOVE the chance to do something like that! You ran away at 13, didn't your parents call the cops or something? I didn't run away, but i left home whe n I was 13 & forgot to tell my mom that I was moveing in with my friend. She had 3 jobs so it's not liked she noticed. A few weeks later I was with the friend that I lived with grocery shoppin & seen my mom in the store. I had been gone 3 weeks. She hadnt noticed it yet! Well, she knew that alot of my close was gone but didnt think much of it because alot of times I would go stay with my friends a few weeks at a time & forget to tell her. But I think that a normal family would have missed there child & realised that they were gone. Was your parents worried about you or did they know were you was?

So funny to see your thread here today LOL I realize you didn't write this just because of me but just this afternoon I thought it was unusal we haven't heard about your weekend and the deck painting, yard work and the visit with the family. I hope you got it done. I read this as well as the other stories of the cicuses/carnivals you were with and I still think it sounds like a hard job to me. Glad to see you back in the loop.

You know, the main reason I always took my daughter to cicus visits is because we loved the cats. Other animals too, but the cats were our favourites. After the show we would walk along the allowed areas to get a better view of the cats in their cages. A black leapard would be very special. I don't think I have ever seen one in a circus. Just how would you clean a cat without it having a go at you? I don't think my pet cats would allow me to clean them.

Most the cats were tame like a house cat. The Black leopard wasn't tamed though. A hose with a long handled brush is the tools for a bath. That's used for the elephants and camels and horses as well. Thanks for the response also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I think that would be a very exciting job. To actually be able to work with the big cats. You had a very exciting job. Traveling with the circus and training the cats. You have a lot of memorible memories I would venture to say. I enjoyed hearing about this part of your life.

That was really quite something Grandpa Bob. How I wish I could have done anything close to what you have done and had an adventure of a lifetime. But unlike you I get pretty scared easily, and with all those wild cats I wouldnt staye in the same room with them even with all those whip and pistols. The type of adventure that comes once in a lifetime would only be experienced by those who takes risks and daring, which, in essence makes my life really pretty boring. I wish you more adventure Grandpa Bob!

Wow, what a wonderful story. I have to admit that I don't like to see big cats or any wild animals in circuses, though I understand that these days they have strict rules to follow? Not totally sure about that. You could wrote an autobiography. What I've read of your life that you've shared so far is amazing. I think a lot of people would be interested in buying. I for one would definitely buy. Maybe its something you could look into :o)

I'd be very interested personally to hear how well you feel the animals were cared for in general! What circus was this? Did any of them show signs of illness or stress from so much travelling? How large were their enclosures? Did trainers ever use force, punishment, agression, or fear with any of the animals? Were hooks commonly used on elephants? Did you ever see someone hit, kick, or otherwise abuse an animal? Did they receive routine vet care as well as when they were ill or injured? What kind of illnesses and injuries were you aware of? How many animals were euthanized in some way or another because of illness/injury, aggression problems, or they just couldn't perform well any longer? I know from firsthand experiences that you can't believe what anyone else says about how animals are treated in different industries. I've worked at petshops and investigated puppy mills personally so I can attest that what is said about the horrors are certainly true! But I'd like to hear more about circuses from someone firsthand too.
