Caving is the recreational sport of exploring caves. Speleology is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment. I love to go in caves. Whether it is on a guided tour or just a trek in a local cave, It is big fun to me. We have a great one here. It is called The Lost Sea. (Link: http://www.thelostsea.com/home.htm ) It is a cave with an underground lake and a long history. I won't bore you with the history lesson, though. I am writing about the trip we took last year with our Girl Scout troop. we got to spend the night in the cave!! It is called The Wild Adventure tour. ( Link: http://www.thelostsea.com/Groups.htm )"This special tour is made for organized groups such as the Scouts, schools, camps, churches, etc. Those who participate in the tour are treated to a regular cavern tour as well as an exciting tour into the undeveloped cave rooms where one crawls through cracks, crevices, nooks, and crannies". "On this tour, guides point out many striking formations such as anthodites (cave flowers), which are so rare that the Lost Sea contains 50% of the world's known formations. Also, visitors view rooms where ancient jaguar roamed, moonshine was made, and saltpeter was mined for gunpowder by Confederate soldiers." Anthodites are really beautif, here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthodite It was so cool. The girls got to go in to all kinds of cave rooms that others are not allowed in. they got to crawl through small crevices. Two rooms the way out is a slide down the mud on their tush! they loved that. the only thing that i did not like was the porta potties. they were so nasty smelling. I hated to even go near them let alone in them. And of course that was the only place to change out of our mus covered clothes. Most of the clothes would not come clean. the red mud just would not come out! the girls had fun though and that was the most important thing. It was one of our best trips! If you would like to know more about caves, or would like to see some great photos visit this webpage: http://www.goodearthgraphics.com/showcave.html

Now that sounds like a trip my girl scout troop would love to go on. Although we have one girl that is afraid of the dark so she would have to carry her 8-pound flashlight with her. lol Thank you for including the links so I can check it out more.

I have visited some caves, but as I have gotten older I tend to get more claustrophobic! The Lost Sea sounds like a great cave tho. Thanks for the info and the links.

You welcome. This cave is quite large for the regular tour and does not feel closed in almost all the time. I went to Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, Tn and the path was very narrow, you should not go there.
