I used an old plate and made a ring of pine cones around the edge, glueing them on, then inserted a candle in the middle. It was even better when I gave the pine cones a coat of paint and jazzed them up a bit. The other thing was using big ones to make bird feeders out of. Inserting them in centerpieces or flower arrangements.

That's a pretty good idea too about gluing them to a plate and making a candle holder! I could probably find cheap plants second hand, and get candles from the dollar store. that would be a cheap craft to make, that would probably sell for a reasonable amount.

besides making bird feeders out of pine cones, another idea is to make Christmas trees out of individual cones.
You can put cotton batton around the bottom of it and decorate each tip with glitter and tiny beads...
a friend and i did this with the kids at our church and all the prep was she sprayed the cones green ahead of time.

something I like to do with my kids is make bird feaders. Roll the pine cone in peanut butter and then birdseed and hang from the trees, your yard will turn into the favorite hang out of birds. I even seen something similar sold at craft fairs people were buying them like crazy it looked pretty much like the same idea but with some variations and pretty packaging.

You can put peanut butter in them and then roll them in bird seed and hang them outside for the birds.

I make Christmas ornaments and decorations with the ones I collect from a friends property. Years ago, when I first decided to work with pine cones like this, I only selected the baby pine cones since I wanted to make magnets out of them. This is a good pic of one of the finished magnets: http://www.mylot.com/w/image/2095142.aspx
This year I decided to make Christmas tree decorations but used larger pine cones so I had a little more room to decorate. http://www.mylot.com/w/image/2110394.aspx I found a discussion here on MyLot that explained how to dry them out and make them open up before decorating and was very pleased with the results.

I should have searched before posting, but I jsut started a similiar discussion. This thread has great ideas in it, and I've jotted them down. Thanks for bringing it up. Sorry that I didn't notice it before I started my own. Normally, i search and can't find similiar topics-- but this time there was one.
Sorry venshida-- and sorry to everyone else that takes the time to read my thread....
