The bunny and the eggs have nothing to do with Easter. They were stolen from a pagan holiday called Eostar(also called Ostara). Funny how similar the names are(hint hint). The pagan holiday is a celebration of spring and the bunny and eggs represent life and rebirth.

Easter is the name given to the Christian holiday which corresponds with Ostara/Eostre/Spring Equinox. The latter is a Pagan holiday which falls on the 21st of March.
Ostara/Eostre is named after the Goddess who is honoured on this day, and her She is associated with the Hare and the Egg. Thus, the Easter Rabbit and the Egg were adopted into the Christian festival. The Egg is also a symbol of new life, which is celebrated at Spring Equinox, because this is a time of equal day and night time and the Sun God is growing in strength. Hence, egg-shaped candles are burned to celebrate both new life and the strengthening light from this time forward, until Midsummer Solstice, when the light begins to decrease.
The Hot Cross Bun also emerged from the pagan world, with the Saxons. This is still eaten on Good Friday today, but the Christians relate it to the Cruxifixion, and I believe the Resurrection relates to the Eggs and new life.
So you see, the "old religions" can claim many a festival which is still observed today, because the Christians built their calendar around it.
Brightest Blessings, and Happy Easter, or Ostara.
