I was watching Good Morning American tv show this morning and they were talking about "Alpha Moms" or the new "go to" moms" who keep up to date, or in the know how with all the latest gadgets, information, tools, research, hippiest trends regarding parenting and child rearing. Are you one of these moms that has a professional attitude towards raising your own child? What are your thoughts on this?

I was not an alpha mom. I was one of those types who just took it as it came, never read the book. I did it all by instinct and even though I had read Dr. Spock, I felt it was a bunch of nonsense, so did not buy it. We sort of raised our boys by learning from the mistakes of our parents and deciding not to do them. It worked, and both my sons are now man, one is married and has a baby girl, the other, well there is hope for him yet.

I hear you. I never read any books either and just went with my gut instinct. I was lucky to have my twin sister on hand when I needed her because she already had 3 children before I had my first. Thanks for responding suspenseful.

I do keep myself up to date with information about parenting and health. But not gadgets. I hate gadgets, I think many things are pointless. Especially with baby stuff, I don't need the latest Baby Einstein thingamabob (see I'm not into gadgets lol), I'm sure my grandma did fine without that stuff. I do have friends that come for me if they are interested in natural parenting stuff, like slings, non-vaccinations, feeding, cloth diapers, etc. I don't see it as a professional attitude, just me trying to do the best I can do.

Alpha Moms... wow, I learned new terminology today :) Well, I think I must be a Hybrid Mom. I do keep up to date on gadgets, information, trends and such that are popular with kids and teens. My reasoning is two-fold -- it helps keep me current with my own daughters and my profession involves working with kids and teens online, so I have to keep up with them, as well.
But I absolutely do my actual parenting on my own terms. I believe my child rearing style has been a combination of how I was raised, family values, personal beliefs and objectives for my family and more. I don't actually research how to be a parent... I just rely on "on the job training" :) :)

I know what you mean, "on the job training". I do that to, and just go with my gut instincts. I also relied on own upbringing and also got a lot of solid advice from my sister who had four kids by the time I had my son, so she was a huge help.
Thanks Hybrid Mom for your response :)

It sounds like they're touting these 'alpha moms' as being some great thing. I think kids need solid, consistent parenting tactics, not the 'hippest trends regarding parenting and child rearing. Perhaps 'sheeple moms' would be a more appropriate name for them.

Yup, I do too most of the time. Thanks for your comment!
