Last week a pipe burst in my basement apartment and we ended up with an inch of water down there. The whole place is carpeted so the floor is still wet even today. It smells horrible and is starting to get moldy. What kind of sickness comes as a result of living in an area that has mold growing in it?

I don't know what illnesses can develop short of cholera or dysentery, but you need to contact your landlord to get it cleaned up. If the landlord doesn't respond in a reasonable time, you are going to have to call the health department.

A good website to look up this information would be: www.cdc.gov (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)
I strongly suggest that you hire a company to come in and clean the carpet in your basement, or get a carpet cleaner and do it yourself. Also, you may want to consider repainting the walls with KILZ paint to kill any mold that may be growing on the walls.

Short term can be colds and upper chest congestion, long term can be asthma. A lot of apartment owners that had problems with mold were sued by tenants because their kids developed life long problems from it. Tell your 'landlord' that it needs to be fixed properly. That is something that you do not want to screw around with.

If the carpet is wet and starting to get moldy you need to get it cleaned up as soon as possible. You should either get it cleaned thoroughly with a carpet cleaner, or tear it out of there before you get sick. If the moldy carpet remains in your home, the mold spores can be released causing respiratory problems. Sometimes this can be in the form of allergies, sometimes in the form of asthma. I am not certain of exactly what else the mold may cause, but I do know that it is dangerous for your respiratory system.

Hey my friend please clean and dried your place at once. Exposure to mold is not healthy for anyone.Molds and other fungi may adversely affect human health through three processes: 1) allergy; 2) infection; and 3) toxicity.Airborne toxic mold spores can affect the immune system, nervous system, liver, kidneys, blood and cause brain damage.
