Is it a mess or do you keep it balanced? Do you add and subtract checks or debit payments as you make them? Do you wait till the checking account statement comes in the mail and do it then? I enter my checks and debit payments, as well as deposits, each time I do them so I don't get behind. I also check my account online several times a week.

My checkbook is pretty well balanced. If I don't write in my checks/debits right away, I put the receipts in the register and balance at the end of the day. I also check my account activity online every couple of days to make sure I haven't missed anything.

I keep a very well maintained chequebook having full details about the cheques their values and to whom they have been issued. Apart from this i have maintained an account in excel on my computer and know the balances in all accounts instantly. I maintain accounts of myself, my husband, my father in law and huf accounts.

I won't do the add and substract for my checks or debit payment. What i did is each time i have any payment from debit card or check transaction , i will log in to my account to make sure the transaction is correct and update my current balance .I think check online is more accurate then i do it manualy .It's important to keep your account balance update so that you won't over spend.

I don't actually use my paper checkbook register anymore. I do everything on the computer, and have for several years. So it keeps all of my stuff organized for me, as long as I remember to enter my receipts into the computer. I usually do every couple of days, so it stays pretty up-to-date.

I don't put my debits/credits in every time but I do about once a week. I actually use a spreadsheet and I through the receipts in the folder with my spreadsheet. This way I can still keep up with how much money we've got in the account too.
Then when I get our statement I check it to make sure I didn't forget to add anything. We usually forget a couple of things like gas.

You mean I'm suppose to keep track of the checks and debits that I make? Oh my gosh!!
For real though, I haven't kept track of my checkbook in over a year. I'm just super careful and watch my bank statement online everyday or every other day. Most of the time I carry cash with me whenever I go shopping or buy gas so I don't have to worry about keeping updated on that.
I tried to post this yesterday but mylot was having issues and wouldn't let me post it.
