Moving a hydrangea bush.

Has anyone ever transplanted a hydrangea bush? If so, when is the best time of year to do it, and are there any tips you can give? It's a long story, but my hydrangea bushes are HUGE and they're overshadowing my walkway. I'd like to move them, but I don't want to kill them (I've been known to kill a plant or twenty). Since they are actually growing, I'm scared to move them, but people are walking sideways up my walkway. Any advice?

Well, I see that this discussion is about 9 months old, so maybe you have moved it already. I moved mine this spring (May) without any trouble. I just kept it watered, and it came back strong. Do you trim them back in the fall? I would try and move them back at that time. At least, then, the plant won't go into as much shock when it's moved. Do it on a nice cool day, and make sure you keep it well watered for at least a week or 2. If I'm too late with the advice, I'm sorry. I just saw the discussion now. It might be useful to someone else, though. :) Best wishes, and happy gardening!!! :)
