Pain medication after tooth being pulled

Yesterday Sigil had one small tooth pulled. we sent him in for a teeth cleaning and they found a cavity. The Vet said that it won't affect him since it was a very small tooth at the back of his mouth (this was yesterday and he is eating normal - dry & wet foods). They gave him his normal medication for gum inflammation and a pain killer. The directions for the pain killer is once a day for 5 days, then every other day as necessary. I did give it to him already today. I don't like giving him the extra medication because the anti-inflammatory gave him stomach issues the last time we gave it to him and it is a huge pain to get him to take 1/4 of a Pepcid pill. Besides him not eating, how would I even know that he would need the pain medication? I did ask the Vet and she said that not eating was the clue. Honestly, I don't think this cat feels much in his mouth. Last year when we took him in his gums were severely inflamed and he was still eating like a pig.

It weird some times when you see how far animal medicine has gone. But I wonder about the cavity, if an unchecked cavity can lead to permanent gum disease and teeth rotting in humans, then what about animals?

As far as I know it works the same way which is why Vets recommend at least getting a yearly physical check up to check for such problems.

I would be concerned that the cat can't tell us if he is in pain. He probably isn't as you said he is eating. But I would hate to have my cat in pain. Try opening his jaw, dropping the tablet down his mouth, quickly close his mouth & rub under his neck.

I am not worried about actually physically giving it to him. The pain medicine is a liquid for and they recommend putnig 2 drops on his food (harder than it sounds b/c it is in a syringe that sticks). For his other med which is a pill, I just put it in one cat treat and he just eats it. Our cats are good when it comes to taking their meds. I more worry that I am giving it to him and he doesn't need it.
