Why do most soap makers wear safety goggles?

I see so many soap makers wearing safety goggles while soaping, it's seems like i'm the only one without goggles. If you're careful with the lye you don't need goggles. Do you wear goggles when soaping?

supergirlll The lye is very caustic, it will burn the eye if lye splashes into it.

supergirlll I just bought a pair of safety goggles to protect my eyes in case something goes wrong, I don't hope so!
