Why is George Jones called the Possum, and who gave that name?

I know that George Jones is known as NO SHOW JONES, for missing over 50 concerts in 1979, but I am curious as to where the Possum name comes from and who gave him the name. I thought maybe it had something to do with oppussum's...

Burrellfan1 I don't know the name of a DJ or when the DJ named him that but because of Jones' close set eyes and upturned nose, he thought Jones looked like a possum.
