Why do people cling so strongly to religion?

I'm not saying that believing in god is a bad thing, just that it doesn't make much sense. Anywho, what's wrong with spirituality? Why can't people simply have their own crazy beliefs (like angels, god(s), magic, heaven, etc..)...
