problems with speaker mute

thanks for the replies have tried just plugging in headphones but speakers still active

how can i turn off the laptop speakers and still hear through the headphones out

i have tried to mute laptop speakers in order to listen to just laptop headphones socket but if i mute speakers i also mute headphones !!! please suggest how i can listen on headphones but mute speakers
