Why did clarks dad die?

Clark's dad, johnathan kent... dies. why? i thought he was alive during the regular super man movies? it was awful that he had to die.

foggyday In the past Superman series Clark's dad was alive. This new series of Smallville is changing all the history and all the characters, and yes is pretty confusing for me too.
