rational versus emotional

There was a time at the end of the 20th century when i started to believe that rational humanism was getting the upper hand and our future could be better managed than the past. This believe eroded over the last years with more and more emotions (religion, racism, environmentalism, etc) finding their way into how the world is run. is it just me or does anybody else think that in the long run we as humans will not listen to the rational (scientific) side but always come back to the emotional side, and therefore hardly ever deciding for the right (best probabilities) solution to problems?
