shall i READ for marks or for practical knowledge?

All these years...i have been studying,writing exams and getting marks. however i didn't find much importance of reading in many of the topics i have studied for getting better scores. Marks are a measure of our study. getting more marks,good ranks and grades really puts up our reading skills. but reading for knowledge helps us in many ways..... so, what shall i do? Read just for marks and keep scoring? or Read for gaining knowledge and practical applications without bothering about marks,grades etc..
