Reporting cheaters.

Earlier today,we had a new member who simply copied something from a text book and sent it into MyLot.I did what I thought was right and reported this to MyLot.I also sent a note to the individual suggesting they read the agreement if they wished to remain.I tried 3 times (diferent questions, same method) and reported them 3 times.Well,MyLot seems to have taken a look into it as the person is no longer active. It cost me 3 points on my rating, but I think it was best for MyLot members .What are your thoughts?

I report them but I don't usually bother to contact them because I know that when their accounts are deleted, I'll lose my points. I did leave a comment for one brand new one last night (Chinese, as usual), warning them that their account could be deleted, and telling them where the link to the guidelines was. No response, of course, and by this morning they had about 70 discussions. If mine was the same one you reported, good riddance.

The member was new from China and I wanted to give them a chance to straighten out their account practise, but they ignored any suggestions and continued this act.At least s/he was reported before too many others lost anything.

why do you worry about what other people do on mylot? dose the web site not have their own people who police the postings? weather or not copying something is bad or not i really can not comment without reading the post, and seeing the whole scene with my own eyes. but i will tell you what is wrong, and that is labeling the Chinese as being a problem. it is always them, that is wrong, your comment borders on racism.

Okay, maybe I missed something, but where did lonewolf mention anything at all about people from China?

Ugh! I didn't realize I was on the third page of this discussion. Please accept my apologies for not having read through the entire thread.

kkerix,I worry about cheaters as they take a portion of the money MyLot sets aside for the members. As for labelling, the post in question mentioned how "the chinese" were notorious for cheating and I do not agree with that comment.IN THIS CASE,the person who posted the discussions put their country of origin as from China. That is all I meant. How could I say that all Chinese were cheaters based on a few on MyLot?I agree with you that labelling is wrong and just another form of prejudicism.I hope I have cleared any confusion I may have caused.I also hope I have explained why I worry about cheaters or scammers on MyLot.Thank you for responding and I hope you can enjoy as much fun as I have from being a member of MyLot.I would really hate to see MyLot fold because a few people abuse the system.

I report members who copy and paste other's work and use them as their response or to start a discussion. I just reported a repeat offender for using this practice. They start out with a brief "thanks for the recipe here is my favorite recipe for you" and copy and paste a recipe that they find on the internet, usually from Recipezaar. It is getting tiresome to keep reporting them, but I tire of the cheaters. They need to be eliminated. Perhaps the only way we can stop the cheating is to end the ability to copy and paste. It will be a hinderance for those of us who do comply with the rules, but in the end it will benefit the MyLot community as a whole.

I had a large comment to this but I hit the wrong button and cleared everything. The only time I put in a discussion is to get people's opinions on something. If someone replies with their opinion and a link to show me,it is a bonus! But if someone copies and pastes an answer from somewhere else,to me it takes away from the discussion. An example is with recipes.I like the idea of sharing new or unusual recipes (being innovative) but if the person is just pasting it from another source,I would prefer the source itself.Thank you for responding and I hope Mylot looks at your suggestion as I feel it is valid.

I do report ones like that when I spot them. Along with other guideline violators (foreign language for example). I don't bother to post to them. My thought is the guidelines are there for all to see and read. They should be doing that before they start posting. They need to take responsiblity for their own actions and know that there are rules and to read them.

Well said.I would like to think when I do send a respond to someone who is not following the rules that I guide or nudge them towards the guidelines but they still have to accept the responsibilities of their choices.Thank you for your insight.

do you mean you lost points for reporting someone who breaks the rules? that's strange I never thought about that and never pay attention to my star points as much. I only know that it's been 9 for a few months now. I think it's strange because why would we lose points for helping mylot ?

You didn't lose the points for reporting them. You did the right thing. You lost the points, because you responded to them (in trying to help them understand the rules). When myLot deleted their discussions, you lost the points you had earned in responding. I hope that makes sense. Good job. Let's keep myLot on the up and up.

You are right in that I lost the points for trying to help them understand MyLot rules.I accepted that I would lose the few points but in the long run all of us would gain .Thank you for replying and explaining this to me.Muchly appreciated.

I think the real reason I figured out I lost a few points was because I had just broken the 2400 mark earlier in the day and then found myself below it again. We do lose a few points, but in the long run we all win as the money is there for the honest members to receive.

There are too many people simply copying and pasting their every post without addding anything of their own. It's our duty to report these people. And while flaming is not allowed, sending a friendly bit of advice never hurts.

I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and try to help new members as much as possible as someone did with me when I first joined.Copying seems to becoming a major problem at MyLot and I am sure in the near future there may be changes in that area.Thank you for responding and I hope you enjoy being a member of MyLot as much as I do.

Good for you and thanks so much. I tend to forget about reporting them and mark them with a negative and then it won't let me report them. I usually find the ones that are copying the exact discussions that someone else did.

Thank you for the positive support. There was a time when I would hit the negative with thoughts of reporting it as I did not understand how the ratings actually were effected. When I found out what the role of the exclamation point was,I used it ONLY if I thought something was definately wrong and not give the individual any rating on that particular discussion but still leave a response in case I was mistaken.I figure if we all can work together we can make MyLot a stronger program.

You were absolutely right! I have done the same myself but I have since learned that so I don't lose, or earn, points if I don't respond just report them because if you respond and the person sees it and know it was you they sometimes get revenge by stalking you and rating everything you do with a (-). I know because it happened to me and I lost reputation percentages in my star.

Thank you for the support!I do try to help newbies out and to give them a second chance with a comment here and there as some mistakes are honest. If I notice a pattern though after trying to set them straight, then I report them with the hope they straighten out before MyLot comes to the same conclusions I have.I think that is one of the reasons why I no longer worry about my rating as much as I use to as I know some people might seek retribution and there would be no recourse for me but to accept my rating and work hard to try to improve it.

I have done the same thing, too. If the person is new and I think they may not know the rules, I might post a warnign in the discussion and not report them right away, but keep an eye on their profile. If they are really blatent about gaming the system, I won't even give them a chance. Usually, I don't bother to post to the discussion if I am reporting it, since they may rate me negatively and I will be wasting my time anyway (since the discussion will be deleated).

Like you said,I try to post a warning to them encouraging them to check the MyLot rules but if they ignore the suggestion,I will let MyLot handle it.Even after 6 months i am still learning about MyLot.Thank you for responding.

I think that people just copying things is wrong and I also think that you did the right thing by reporting it to mylot.

Thank you for the support and I agree that to just copy someone/something is wrong.I hope as a program member we can weed out people who are abusing MyLot.

Cheating of any kind is wrong. I think you did the correct thing in reporting it and I admire the fact that you also questioned the abuser to them personally. Let's hope your rating goes back up since to me it seems unfair that you would lose any points by doing what is right and honest.

I did figure beforehand MyLot would probably take a few points away from me as outlined in their guidlines,so I was not too upset. The quicker we report abuse, the less people will get "hurt" from cheaters.

I think what you did was the right thing to do I have reported a few myself for abuse. What I don't understand is why do you lose points for this? Maybe this explains why my points have dropped?

The few points I lose from reporting a potential cheater is worth it.We all make it back as it leaves the monies a cheater would receive in the coffers for the rest of us to earn.I think we lose the points so that if a large # of people decide to cheat and to band together to support each other, then by supporting a proven cheater by answering(whether intentionally or not)would be wrong.I feel that is why we need to be aware.Quality is so much more important than quantity anyways.

hmm, how can you tell if that thing is from text book, what is the indication, if he is a new member, how come he can copy and paste, while the javascript forbid that. well I think you do the right thing, they must read the text and compile it to new conclusion. and how to message text other? I just a new member too. thank you. well My Lot is the best, and it should be taken care with much respect... sheeh my keyboard got oil all over because I just eat a noodle.... its hard to type cos it slipery

Welcome to MyLot;the program that DOES pay its members. In this particular case, this was an explanation of a legal contract that was being copied word for word. There was no attempt to disguise what they had done.I am hoping that all members both new and old work together to keep MyLot as clean as possible to help MyLot survive. As well, electronics and oil don't normally go together,so watch out for shocks!Have fun as a member of MyLot!.
19 Apr 07
I too think you did the right thing! At least you gave them a chance first, and took you're own time to try and show them the error of their ways! That was kind of you! Which points have been deducted from? Do you mean you're earnings?

Thank you for the support.I lost a few cents and my # (the rating of which yours right now is at 180) but I know in the long run we all gain from it.

personally i don't see a problem with copying something especially if someone is asking a technical question like how to do something, however i think people should say where they have got their information from and if its a website add a link so the person that started the discussion can check its acuracy. God i'm starting to sound like my lecturers now! Anyway if they were simply copying because they couldn't be bothered to write something themselves then you probably did the right thing, we ask for people own opinions not something that has simply been copied and pasted

I don't think I saw that one. But I think copied something from a text book is fine if you want to make it as reference. Of course, we need to write down what book we used, because we quote something that is not our saying. If not, well, you have any right to sent a report for this. But if i was you, i think i will do the same thing. It's tiring to see someone just copying other people's saying though. If it was same idea then fine, at least we write with different languange or different respond. But writing same idea in same language in same words, that's painful.

I am hoping that we can all keep vigilant in strengthening MyLot.The person in question used the book/paper strictly as their discussion(no words of their own) and if they rejoin,I hope they will be able to use what they learned from this.
