I am posting another discussion on anxiety in which I still have several more questions and would like more advice about a few things. Well I have received a couple of responses that helped me figure out what I might want to look into. St. John's wort was one of them. However, I went to the store and discussed this with the pharmacist and he basically told me to be leary of it, stating that there were just so many unidentifiable herbs in them that it could possibly hurt me. Well that kind of shot me down temporarily on that idea. My problem is that I still am stuck with this anxiety and am almost just willing to try the Wort, because I heard some good things about it. Any more advice, please?

Hi there kelandy There are quite a few things that you can do to deal with anxiety without taking medication. I personally think that people have become too dependant on a little pill to solve all of their problems. While I can't speak in an authoritive manner on the herbal remedies as I am not very familiar with them. But in my opinion the first step is to absolutely resolve that you are going to take control of your anxiety. You can not be wishy washy or cut yourself any slack once you do make the resolution. Then once you have decided that YOU are absolutely set on taking control of this problem you need to make a plan. And live that plan every moment of every day. First I would recommend that you start to exercise every day. I am not talking about buying fancy equipment just getting your body moving so that your heart rate gets up and stays there for at least 15 minutes but 30 is best. This releases releases your bodies natural chemicals that fight depression and anxiety. Then I would recommend that you begin to meditate. Some people find this difficult when they first begin because they find themselves distracted. But you can begin by taking in very slow and deep breaths through your nose and slowly releasing them from your mouth. It is important that you release them in a slow and controlled manner. when you find yourself distracted, bring your focus back to your breathing. Some people add a mantra to the meditation. To the effect that they envision themselves taking in positive energy on the inhale and releasing the anxiety on the exhale.

Some types should not take St. Johns Wort. I tried it and it was very bad for me and made me horribly nervous and overly sensitive. It causes possible dangers in blood pressure and also you must avoids foods containing tyramine. Also it has interactions with several other medications. And NEVER take it in conjunction with anti-depressants.
