Do you shop at the $1 store, then lie about it?

I admit to shopping at the dollar store, but I have friends that when asked " Where did you get that?", they lie about it and say they got it at Sears or TJ Max or somewhere. I see nothing wrong with shopping at the discount stores, none of them. You have to stay within your means or budget, right? Just about all knick-knacks come from China or some other foreign country anyway. Why pay $9.99 for something when you can get the same exact product for a buck? I have had these same friends that lie about where they got their items come over to my house and see the same exact item hanging on my wall or sitting on a shelf. Most don't ask where I got it, they just blush a bit and try to act like they don't notice it. Why is it some folks feel the need to lie about shopping at discount stores like the $1 store?

I love shopping at the dollar store. I don't see nothing wrong with shopping their either. I don't lie about shopping their. I always find great items there at a very cheap price. Theres alot of name brand items at the dollar store. I shop at the Dollar Tree store every weekend, I love that store. The employees know my name now. Some people love bragging about the brand name items that they bought at expensive stores. I guess they think it is cool.

I agree lightingMD. I would rather save 8 bucks by shopping at the dollar store and use that money for something else that I can't get at a discount store :)

I do not come from a rich family so I spend every cent smartly. I do not have any fancy handbag or fancy shoe in my closet. However, i know some people who will buy a fake brand Gucci at China street and still brag about it in front of their friends or colleague that it was an limited original Gucci bought by her 2nd bf, etc.. The dishonesty is so disgusting.

Hi serena, I try to stay away from materialistic folks. A high price tag or big spending habits do NOT impress me. Pretty sad when a person feels that they have to spend large amounts of money on items to impress their friends. Friends , real friends, like you for who you are, not for how much you paid for the shirt you're wearing or the vase on your shelf. Mine came from the dollar store or yard sale, if it gets ripped or broke...no biggy, I'll just go get another one....lol

I know why they say they got it somewhere else is because they are snobs. I have a friend who buys jewlery from Avon. Avon has great stuff, we were somewhere and someone admired her ring. I said she got it at Avon. She was so mad at me she did not speak to me for hours. I asked her why. She said "Because I think Avon is cheap and I do not want anyone to know I buy cheap jewlery". Well I love a bargarn. I do no care if I got something for $0.99 or more. I am proud when I find a bargin

Hi teapotmommommerced, Wow, where DID you get that name?....lol If your friend doesn't want anyone to know she buys cheap stuff, then maybe she shouldn't let her friends know that she does........Anyone who shops and buys Avon products can ( just like us $1 store peeps) can spot the item and know where it came from.

I never really bought shoes or any other kind of apparel items at the dollar store, but I do buy household items there. They are cheaper and its the same item that is sold in other retail stores. I don't care too much about the "made in China" or where ever. Because these are just the everyday items that you use and its consumable so they will be replaced frequently. Plenty of people buy things at the dollar store and I don't really know anyone who lie about it unless they are extremely wealthy. I really can't imagine someone lying about saving money. If my friend found a nice deal on something that I was looking for I would really want them to tell me.

Howdy sir_talk_alot :) Not all folks who lie about shopping at the dollar store are rich. I have some friends that are far from rich, that's why they shop there. Like it was mentioned in another comment, for some peeps, it's a self esteem issue. Maybe they forget who they're talking to, and when a person lies about so many different things to too many different folks, they forget what lie they told to who. That way of living is just too complicated for me. Heck, half the time I forget where my car keys are, let alone be going around lying about stuff. I'd get caught for sure because I wouldn't be able to remember what I told to who....lol

I only lie about where I shop (the large Salvation Army nearby = my real favorite place)so I can keep the good clothes and prices to myself. I'm just a very greedy person so it's natural for me to lie! I'm having trouble deciding whether that type of greed is normal or just plain sick XD But yeah, I would never be embarrassed about where I get any of my things, if i like something cheap, I get it no matter what anyone else thinks since most of the time I could care less about people's opinions anyway.

I agree Wyayenjee, If I like it, I'm going to buy it. I'm not into brand names. I usually stay away from them just because they are so expensive. I don't go to the Salvation Army hardly ever any more. Inflation has about ruined the experience for me. They have raised their prices so dang high around here...a person is better off buying new stuff on sale somewhere. They do have some things are affordable and worth the price, but it's not very often so I don't go as frequently as in the past.

I don't lie about it. I brag to people. I'll tell them when I find a great deal at the dollar store. Why should I pay department store prices if I don't have to? I think that's silly to do and I feel like I'm the better shopper for finding such deals. I happen to love the dollar stores and I buy a lot of good things there. I let others know too when I find a great deal so they can get them as well if possible. I also love finding new stores to go to :) That can be lots of fun because no two stores have exactly the same things.

Hi emeraldisle, I go to the dollar store at least once every week. I may not buy something every time I go, but the turn around is so fast that you have to check regularly or miss out on some good deals. And you're right about no 2 stores having the exact same stuff. I live close to 3 different stores and see different products at each one.

Some people might feel inadequate shopping at a discount store, almost like they are admitting defeat. Other people would be proud to show off the 'bargain' they got.. I guess pride is the biggest factor.

Hi sweetee, Pride? You'd think that with the struggle most folks are having in this day and age to make ends meet that they wouldn't let their pride get in the way of saving money.

It's beyond me why anyone would lie about things like that. Don't they realize people can spot dollar store items right off, well, for the most part. I have known people like that too. Heck. I'm proud of a bargain I don't care if people know I'm cheap.

Hey terilee, What I find funny is those who lie about it and then forget to take the sticker off that's on the bottom of the item they got there......lol If you shop there yourself, it's easy to spot the items because you've been there and seen them :)......some people!

Nope, I don't lie about it. I love it when I get a good deal..I clip coupons, I shop for stuff that's on sale whenever possible, and I sometimes go to the Dollar Store, Family Dollar, Dollar General or wherever cuz I can't see paying 5.00 for something I can get the exact same thing for 1.00. That's just stupid. I mostly buy cleaning products and household stuff at the Dollar Store, but sometimes I buy other stuff too. I always spend 30.00 or 40.00 when I go in one of those stores unless I'm really poor that day..but I get a HECK of a lot more stuff for my 30.00 at the Dollar Store than at a regular store. I also love thrift stores, yard sales, estate sales, and the Salvation Army..and Big Lots. If someone wants to think they're better than me cuz they can spend 3x or more the amount of money I spend for the same stuff.. good for them..LOL

Hi Suze05, I like saving money too. I have never had so much money that I was allowed the luxury of going to a high end store just because I could. As far as Good Will and the Salvation army go...here they have raised their prices so damn high, it's cheaper to go to Wal mart and buy brand new clothing.

I'm cheap and I'm proud! My mother in law is a manager at a Family Dollar, so she lets us know when there are really good deals there. We're poor, so we have to save where we can. And if I get something for super cheap and someone asks where I got it, I have no problem telling them. I really don't know why someone would lie about it though. Nobody I know would lie, we're all pretty poor, haha.

I have friends that do the same thing. Some of these friends also hate it when I ask them to go with me, but they usually find something cute and buy it. I love $1 stores, the one we had in my town went out of business, and I miss it! I also love to shop second hand stores to find great bargains, and most of my friends hate that, too, and garage sales. Maybe I need new friends or something, because I love to find bargains, and who cares if it is not brand new, as long as it is in good shape! tdbrower1969

Hello tdbrower1969, Some folks won't even step into a dollar store, they have no idea what they are missing. I buy doggy toys for my dogs, beats paying up to $6 for the same thing at WalMart. Especially with my dogs...they rip those toys apart in no time. garage Sales can produce some very excellent finds. You'd be surprised at how many folks know nothing about an items value or worth.

My friends shop at the one dollar store too. I try not to buy Christmas or birthday gifts there, because they'll all know that I paid a buck or less for their gift. It's kind of awkward. But the candy prices are good. And, they have cute kids books, way cheaper than the Walmart. So, no, I don't deny it. I'm proud to be a cheap mom!

This is what I am talking about. Why do you say it's awkward? Do you put that much store into what your friends think, that you feel the need to NOT buy certain gifts at the $1 store. So what if they know how much you paid for an item......if friends are going to judge you by how much money you spend on their gifts, then are they really someone you want to hang with? If I have to worry about what people think as far how much I paid for a gift, then I'm better off finding new friends....and its easier on my pocketbook.

No, I don't see why I should have too. I find a lot of really nice stuff there and whenever someone asks I tell them I got it at the dollar store. My partner and I found some really nice unfinished wooden boxes there for $1. I bought two of them and she bought one because it was really too much of a great deal to pass up. A friend of us had asked where we bought them because she wanted some and we told her. If it's cheap and it'll work, I don't see the point in lying about it. I mean, like you said, if you can get it for over half of what other stores charge, what's the big deal?

Yes, I sure do go to the dollar store. I don't lie about it because I figure it is a good place to get many things that I need. For example, they have sugar free candy that I love, they have some cleaning products that are good. I use glade plug-ins and they can be expensive, but they have them pretty cheap and I think that some things such as wrapping paper and such are sold there for cheap. Have a nice day. Pablo

It is a shame that this 1$ shop doesn't exist in Portugal. It would be great to buy things at 1 dollar. And I guess I would make my friends jealous about the stuff I would buy in this stores.
