Cat names

I was sitting here thinking about my cats' names. Then it made me think about what other people have named their cats. Which then lead to me thinking about how people came up with their cat's name. A little less than a year ago we decided to adopt a kitten. He was so adorable and had the biggest paws ever since he had 6 toes on each paw. we knew we had to take him home with us. We named him Madmartigan after the movie Willow. About 4 months later we decided to get him a platemate. She cae from a friend of my mom's. It took us months to come up with a name for her. We wanted to have it be something from the movie Willow as well. But we could not agree on anything. One day we were talking about the movie and came up with an idea for her name. After discussing the scene where Willow encounters Madmartigan in the movie as Willow is trying to return the Dikini baby...Madmartigan tries to feed the baby blackroot. And that's how and when we decided to name her Blacroot. She's black in color and it's from the movie. So what are your cat's names and how did you come up with them?

My cat was named "Jackie The Ripper" because she would try to kill anything that moved, however she was very sweet with people and dogs and loved to take baths(!) Great discussion! :) Catster for you: http://www.catster.com

Great name choice! So suiting and very cute. My one cat loves water...I have not tried to bath her since we have had her but I remember as a kitten my mom had given her a bath or two before we came to get her. She came from one my mom's friend. I have Catster for Madmartigan. I haven't updated it in forever. Blackroot needs to get one. hehe

Well here goes my long list of names for my 8 cats. 3 of them take off from time to time but always come back to eat. First my cat Knuckles and she is the mother and grandmother of all of them. She was my baby and my favorite but one day about 4 months ago or more we accidentally left the passengers side window open on our car and while we were sleeping that night she decided to jump in. Well my husband went to the store about 4 miles up the road the next morning while I was still sleeping and didn't realize she was in there. As soon as he opened the car door when he got to the store she jumped out and took off and he couldn't catch her. She has been gone ever since and I miss her so much. We got her name because my husband started calling her numb nuts, lol when she was first born and I said I didn't want to call her that so I came up with knuckles. I know I said the ones that do take off come back every once in awhile because I'm hoping she will return one day but I don't think she will. :( Ok next is Stewart. He is the oldest male and hasn't been home for a little while but he always comes back to eat when he gets tired of tom catting around. I got his name because in his face he looks like Stewart Little, the mouse, lol. Oscar, I really don't know how I came up with it but I guess he just looks like an Oscar to me. He roams around sometimes but is home more often than the rest of the males. Ozzie, he is all black and my husband named him after Ozzie Ozbourne. Because people call him the Prince of Darkness so that and my cat Ozzie is pure black. He hasn't been home for a couple of weeks but will be home again. Lucy Lu, She looks like a Chinese cat in the face so that is why I call her Lucy Lu. Suzie Q is her sister and the names rhyme. That is how I got the name for Suzie Q. because the names rhyme, lol. Then there is Annie. She is a calico like Suzie Q. and she also looks like a cat my grandma had when she was still alive. My grandma named her calico Granny Annie and that is where I got the name Annie for her. Minus the Granny because she is still really young. She is only a little over a year old. Then there is the youngest, Leo and he is Lucy's baby. He is almost a year old already. I named him that for 2 reasons: 1, because I wanted to name him a name that started with an L like his mother and 2, he is a big bully and beats up the rest of the cats even though they are much older than him. So I call him Leo the Lion, lol. He even bats my big dog in the face. He is one brave little kitty, lol. I also have 4 dogs but you didn't ask about them so I will leave it at my cats for now. Sorry so long but I love talking about my animals, lol. :) Speaking of your cat with 6 claws, I once had a few like that and then I even had one with 7 claws. I think it has something to do with them being inbred.

Never apologize for the length. I loved it. And I loved hearing all about your kitties' names. It's nice to know they all have some sort of meaning. The story of Knuckles made me a little sad. That would really suck. But who knew! I forgot to mention that Blackroot has 5 toes on each paw. Cats with extra toes are called polydactyls. It's a mutation that cause there to be extra toes. People actually breed polydactyls and will usually use a non-polydactyl to breed the polydactyl with. There are proven to be very healthy and normal kitties...they just have extra digits!

very interesting about the polydactyl. I think I spelled it right but you know what I mean, lol. I never knew that and was always told it was because of them being inbred. Learn something new everyday. I also have 5 puppies. My oldest female dog just had 10 puppies and we got rid of 5 of them. The humane society is helping us get her and my youngest female fixed. We already have an appointment on June 18th. We only have to pay $25 each dog and they will pay the rest. Then I have to get my 3 female cats fixed and that is going to come to $45 altogether. It will definitely be worth it in the long run. My cats just keep having kittens and I can never find them homes so I end up keeping them. I won't ever take an animal to the dog pound and I have so many that they are expensive to feed. I wouldn't have it any other way though but I am definitely getting all of my females fixed for sure. I will have to wait on one of them though because I am afraid she is already pregnant. Oh well nothing I can do until she has them and is done nursing. Just more kitties for more! My husband is not too happy but oh well he will get over it, lol. :)

A lot of people don't know a lot about polydactyls. So then a lot of people misinform others on them. It's great that the SPCA is helping you out. I think it's great that you also want to get them fixed. And it's really nice to hear that you keep them and don't pawn them off somewhere. Even with the cost of everything you stick with it and that's awesome. Too many other people just don't care and it's sad.

I name all my cats after soap opera stars (unless they are already named when I get them), I have one cat named Jackson Montgomery after the All My Children attorney.

Very creative. I love when people take something they like and use it creatively. Great idea.

Great names. Both very sweet and girly. I wish sometimes that Blackroot had a girly name. She is such a little priss sometimes. She's tomboyish though. She acts all girly but she loves to wrestle with Madmartigan. He totally outweighs her too. haha

Well we've had 3 cats so far in our this generation. We got a pair of sisters when I was 12. We lost my sisters cat in 2004 now we have mine still, old but alive and a new cat from 2004. Here we go. The sisters names. I named mine Princess cause I really just loved the name. She seemed perfect so she got the middle name. Princess Angel My sisters cat, my cats sister had patches on her fur in different spot. Plus she loved to cuddle. So first and middle name: Patches Cuddles Now the newest cat, few years old. Came with her name and we loved it. She was orange and a girl a female tabby. We looked for an irish name, and my sisters cat it is she named her Maggie Irish. Or Maggie. We call all our pets by their first names, but having a middle name is fun and makes them more like people if you ask me! :))

I love the idea of havign middle names for them. Very cute! My mom's pup has a middle name, then again we had to since he was AKC registered. But it definitely makes them be more like furry little people.

Hello Coconutpatty! I have a cat whose name is Mingsy, she is a three-colored female cat and really loves to play in her kitten days. I just found her crying under the bush when she was young and I decided to adopt her. She was really young when I found her, she doesn't even know how to eat so I used a injection without a needle to feed her. She was 3 months old when I decided to give her, her name. In our place cats are called "miming". In the word miming I decided to pick-out the last four letters then I added s and y si that it would sound good.

I'm glad that you found her and nursed her into good health. I don't even want to think of how things could have been had you not found her. She may not have made it much further in her life. I like her name, it's cute. I also think it pays to wait a little bit if you don't have a name and then you get to see more of their personality.

When I adopted a kitten my boyfriend named him Tater because he liked to lay on the couch and watch tv. My boyfriend was impulsive and had to have a cat too. So we adopted the kitty I have now. He named her Luna. I'm not sure why. But both cats lived with me because he had a big dog at his house. When we broke up, he got along better with Tater and I got along better with Luna... so Luna stayed with me.

We have a dark black and light brown tabby cat. Upon getting him as a baby, we were so intrigued by his stripes that we were kicking around names associated with stripes. Of course the usual 'Tiger' came up but we ruled that out as too common. Next we thought about various military-related names associated with 'earning one's stripes' such as sargeant, corporal, captain etc. Again, we assumed those to be too common. Finally, one evening my husband said, the cat's stripes look like ripples on water after a stone is thrown into the water. BINGO! We had the cat's name...it is Ripples!

I have two cats at my moms that i named, one was zoey, the name just came to me when i seen the kitten. and the other is morgan after captain morgan, which was what i was drinking a lot of when i got the cat. recently my friend got a cat that looks nearly identical to my morgan and she without knowing or remembering the cats name she named hers the exact same thing. I think we're a lot alike in some ways lol.

i prefer more simple names... like : blackie or julie or king or kathy. u usually choose the name of my pet as simple as i can but i try not to use a very common one. most of the time the cat makes me think of a name. i named one of the cat i had king because he was acting like a king, like he was the owner not me.

we have mishu, which is how you call a cat in spanish and shes a tabby so she has a big M on her forehead, gracie (after thomas in oleander's cat), and 2.0 (two point o), which is gracie's kitten and looks almost identical, so we named him gracie version 2.0, but 2.0 for short.

I have two cats, Magellan and Guinevere. I've always wanted a cat named Magellan for whatever reason (probably because when I was a child I fancied myself a magician and wanted a cat as a sidekick) so when I got this one, that became his name. Guinevere just went along with it because of the whole tale of King Arthur thing... in truth they should both (accurately) be named Crazy and Crazier. I think anyone could say that about their cat, though. Too bad there are only so many synonyms to crazy.

Hank Little Foot Hank derives from Henry Chinaski who is an autobiographical character used by Charles Bukowski. My cat is also half Sioux Indian which is where the "Little Foot" part of his name comes from.

my two cats - Sassy and oreo together without fighting
We had 3 cats but one passed away in November we had named him mooch. This was because he was a stray from our neighbourhood that just about everyone fed. He would eat at our house go across the street sleep under their porch then go next door and scratch at the door to be fed. When winter came around we just could not let him stay outside. We get some real bad snow and cold and i just had to take him in. He would still go to the other houses to be fed though lol hence the name mooch. Our other two cats are Sassy and Oreo, sassy is from the movie homeward bound this was my oldest daughters fave movie 14 years ago and she named her Sassy. Oreo well that's pretty self explanatory he is black and white.
