Do you think our country would be in better shape today without welfare?

Did FDR open a can of worms when he created the welfare system? Is welfare beneficially used or destructively abused?

I think it would be better if the welfare system smartens up and realize how many people out there are cheating the system. They should clamp down on the ones who can make aliving on just from there work then the ones who cant. I understand that if your not mking enough fromwork then yes I can see still getting welfare, but these ones who get 5 checks a month plus having there father help take care of her and her family then no.

I totally agree. The welfare system would be fine if it were only helping those who genuinely need it. Unfortunately, it gets all the deadbeats who abuse it.

I think it should be allowed to give medical assistance, and food stamps, but to go to the extreme to give them money for everything is crazy. I myself have had to get emergancy medicaid twice when I became ill. At that time I could have gotton welfare to pay for my rent and food and everything but I didn't take advantage of all that. I moved in with my parents until I could get better. I kind of think health care should be easier to get and cheaper. I think if we limit what we can give people they will get themselves on their feet quicker. Of course if every case was just examined better so that the people abusing the system were denied then there wouldn't be a problem.

Well consider what would happen if welfare were abolished. You'd have an increase in homeless people, and increase in people living in shanty-towns at the edge of cities, an increase in crime. It doesn't sound like a good move.

both i think with the healthcare that is used is def needed, everyone needs help with healthcare, but the system itself is def. abused, i know way too many people who have it just because they are lazy and they have more and more kids to stay on it!!

i realize that there is much abuse of the current welfare system but to do away with it would be leaving those who are legitimetly using the system at immediate and immnenent danger. i wish there weree better ways of protecting the system and i for one would rather contribute money to some people abusing it so that so many people who really need it can use the system the way it was meant to be used. i would hate to think what would happen to those using it the way it was meant to be used if it didnt exist.

Yes I do, i think its holding back a lot of people that can get there butts of the couch and get a job. I think we need to make stricter rules for people that collect welfare. I would rather flip burgers than lower my self to depending on my government for supporting me and my family.
