Last night I joined a beach clean up. Have you ever done something like this?

Every year we have what is called a 'Spring Clean'. Our town organizes a place and a date and whoever in the community that is interested turns up. They give out the garbage bags, we bring our glovews, and we pick up all the liter that has been accumalating. This year, we did a big clean up on our beach. Does your town do anything like this? Do you get involved if the chance comes up? It was great to see so many people out, from people with their dogs, to families, and even large groups like the local Scout troupes. It was a fun night, with brilliant weather, and our beach is sparkling again. Does your town or neighborhood have a 'Sping Clean?'

We do have days like that here in Melbourne, I have never been to one of them but many a time on a nice evening I have walked along a beach or the local lake with a plastic bag and picked up glass and rubbish.

Yes, I think a lot of folks do that as a matter of course, some of us just hate seeing such a beutiful place wrecked by thoughtless people. I am always picking up glass, too because I know of two dogs who have had their pads badly cut at the beach.

I don't live near a beach, but I wish more people would do that around our lakes.

O lovely! The great job done and looks like a true nature lover. Well, to keep the things in order is one's foremost duty and to keep the environment clean is our joint duty. We are here to live a good life rather a dirty one. I haven't done sort of things before but try my best to abide by the principles that make one "humane" Thanks for your above exercise in keeping the environment clean.

I think another nice aspect was the sense of community. It was great seeing people who live on and near the beach actively taking care of it. We picked up a HUGE amount of rubbish, too!

I have done similar thing but instead of cleaning a beach, my friends and I clean up a vegetable farm for an elderly couples so that they can start growing new crops for them to sell. It was tiring but to be able to help the owner was priceless.

Wow, that's really great. I'm glad you did "Spring Clean"; hope you sustain such great job for Mother Earth. At least you did something concrete in response to the call of a clean and green environment. Yes, we did something like that in our city, and I say that it was not only fun, but fulfilling as well. We dived into the seas to scour for trash with trash bags in tow. And yes, lots of people volunteered to clean up our seas. Dubbed as International Coastal Clean Up Day, students, teachers and civic organizations participated in the noble undertaking. The activity should be sustained though for better results. We should really clean our beaches on a regular basis in order to resuscitate them back to life. Congrats! Hope people in other parts of the world would also do the same. After all, this is the only planet we will ever have in our life time.

No I have never done anything like that before. I have kind of heard of it, but not in my area. We just have a lake and it's not a very nice lake either. I think it is a good idea that people of the community help clean up the beach. That's nice and thoughtful of the people that clean the beach so others can enjoy it too.

Yes, the city I live in does this. We meet at a recycling facility and are given a bunch of trash bags and then we all meet back about 7 hours later. Most people just walk within a 3 miles radius of the recycling center to clean, but some drive farther out in the city to pick up. My parent's neighborhood has a neighborhood clean up every 6 months. It's a clean neighborhood, but they use the oppurtunity to maybe pick up stray tree branches, trash that escaped when the garbage men came by, and they also fan out across the street from the nighborhood where no one lives, and therefore people sometimes throw out litter.

This is a very nice way to clean the beaches. In Portugal they also do this but not in the spring, but in the summer. They usually give people a bag and in return for the bag full of trash they give snacks or ice cream.

I would love to participate in something like that. It's a good thing to get involved in, and a great experience for kids. I think that people who would participate would be less likely to litter and help keep things neat.

That is an excellent idea. Great to hear that you got such good participation. I lived in a coastal town when I was in high school. Many of the student organizations chose that as their community project each year. So many people would come out that it was almost amazing. We would sweep down the beach in no time at all. We also painted the seawall each year. It really generated pride in our town. Where I live now each neighborhood kind of does their own thing and that seems to work rather well for the setting we are in.
