what makes a good photograph? is it a case of being all in the eye of the beholder? i do believe that good photographers have to have 'the eye', but training also has to have a lot to do with it right? there are some pictures that i've taken that i loved and made me feel so proud to have taken them despite my lack of experience or a high-end camera, and there are some that i felt were ready for the recycle bin the moment i saw them. the composition, the way the subject is placed, all these technical stuff boggles my mind. but despite all these there are some photos that come out good, for me. however, it might not be the same for every person who i show it to...so what is it, really?

In my opinion, the photographer's eye for detail plus the knowledge of the basics of photography come into play when taking a photograph. It does not matter if you have the high-end top of the line camera if your composition is off, your photo is overexposed and there's too much clutter. I hope you won't mind my commenting on the photo you attached. There is no real subject here, you see the bench, the ship behind it, the people by the side and the tree. Here's a site that I get tips from as I am also still in the process of perfecting my photography skills. I hope it can help you too. www.photonhead.com/photographytips

Composition, contrast, tones, subject matter, light exposure all play a part in taking a good photograph. You also have to take in consideration the paper it is printed on.

yeah, your're right, a lot of factors go into a good photograph...and its good that some of them don't need one to have an expensive camera ;)

You may never know when you take the great photo. The famous photo of the Marines raising the Flag over Iwo Jima was not the one that the Photographer thought was published. He took two photos that day. When he saw the flag being raised he took a quick shot Then had the 20 some men in the detail pose around the flag and composed the picture he wanted. The newspapers pickup the first picture and when he won the Pulitizer Prize he thought it was for the second photo. You never know what picture the world will judge as your best.

i was just watching Flags of our fathers the other day...what a coincidence! yeah, you never what photo you take will capture the world's attention. but i guess what made that photo in iwo jima so important is that it captured what the american public so desperately wanted to see, and that was they were not sending their sons to die over there for nothing.i guess the composition of the photo didnt matter to the public at that time.
