How to judge success?

I have been doing my present job as a teacher for decades. One problem keeps disturbing me whether or not I'm a successful teacher not? Every year my students gave me very high evaluation after each semester and speak of me highly. But very few of them would remember me after they left my class or graduated and left.

well students tend to forget teachers who taught them in the junior classes, because young students do not focus much on remembering what their teachers were like, what kindnesses they bestowed, and little favors. childhood days or even teenage days are taken very lightly and are passed with more frolicing and fun. only few students really realize the abundant blessings and favors of their teachers. so dont be so upset. its a routine of the teachers.

How do you know that your students wil not remember yuo after they have left your class or graduated? That is an assumption on your part .. these children that you teach are learning from you .. not just their formal studies but also many other things. I think that you cannot judge yourself as to whether you are a good teacher or not .. but you are still in the school .. still educating and presumably that means that you are doing your job well. Your students give you a high evaluation .. they don't need to do that .. so their decision and rating obviously reflects on you as a teacher .. you are a credit to the teaching profession. There is no other way to look at it .. at least as far as I am concerned. It does depend on your country of course .. but in many countries if a teacher is not doing their job properly then the parents will have something to say. If that has not happened, why concern yourself about the matter. Go on doing what you have been doing .. knowing that you are teaching these students of yours and contributing to making them good people who will be a credit to their family and community.

Well, thank you for your encouragement. I don't really mind whether students remember me or not. What I wanted to know is whether my teaching is a success or not and students' feedback is one of the main elements that I judge my success with as I don't have any other means to judge it.

If I were a teacher, I would look at my former students who have moved on to other grades. Do they move on prepared for the next grade? I have a friend who teaches math at a local state college. Most of the freshmen come from the high schools in the county. He can usually tell which school each freshman comes from by how prepared they are for college level math.

Hi easyzheng, During my life years :-), I have had many teachers and instructors. If one of them, for instance, shows up in front of me and tells his name, I will probably remember him although he has to remind me a bit. It doesn't mean that he didn't do his job well. But it has passed for so many years and I am so busy in my life. But I had some favorite teachers because they were so much care about the progress of my studies. They explained things easier than other teachers. My favorite teachers could also teach a difficult subject with many ways. With this kind of teachers, my classmates and I were never bored. But I haven't met them again until now. I am so busy in my life and I also don't know where my teachers are now. But yes, I still remember them.
