How to chop onions without tears?

There are many tips on how to chop onions without crying but I never found one that really works. Lately I read this one on Reader's Digest magazine. Freeze the onion for 30 minutes before chopping it. I can not always freeze an onion and wait 30 minutes before I chop it so this one also doesn't work for me. Do you use another solution?

What I do is peel the onions a good hour before I use them, soak them in water and then put them in the refrigerator. I need not freeze them since it'll hold up water and when you use them in sauteeing, the water will mix with the oil and we all know that wouldn't be pleasant. I also agree with the bread thing. I've tried that once before when I fixed quick spaghetti.

Thank you asteriskec. That's a good solution if you don't need to freeze them. Thank you!

The one that worked for me was to put the peeled onion in the freezer for ten minutes. Also, keeping them refrigerated is a listed option as well. Another option which I haven’t tried, is to wear swimming goggles while chopping onions. Granted you’ll look kind of silly, but you’ll be able to chop onions like any other vegetable.

I always chop onions under running water or I soak onions in a bowl of water before I chop them.

Using a snorkel mask (don't laugh!) should work pretty well, as it blocks both your nose and eyes from the gas that's being released as you cut into it. But unless you already have one, and have it easily on hand in your kitchen, it seems like too much trouble to me. The sharper your knife and the sweeter the onion, the less you'll cry. You cry because the sulfur gas in the onion becomes sulfuric acid, and when it hits your eyes... well, that's why they made you wear goggles in high school chemistry. Sweeter onions have a lower sulfur content, which makes them less tearful to chop, slice, or dice. A sharper knife causes less injury to the membranes of the onion, which means it releases smaller quantities of said gas. Other than that, I've never noticed any of the suggestions anyone else has listed to be helpful. I cry like a baby every time I cut an onion, and that happens just about nightly. Best of luck to you, though.

Hi Honey....... Mmmm..... I just remembered I have to send you the recipe for "Indian Curry"....... I'll send it to you later today. Btw........ I know you would not have tried that "Butter Chicken" stuff....... but, just give it a try you will love it. About cutting onions without crying :- There are 2 ways you can reduce this. Though you cannot completely not cry while cutting onions :- 1) Peel the onion and keep it under running water for atleast 5 to 10 minutes. You can keep washing them with your hands as you let the water on the peeled onions. This 1 really works very well. 2) Remember........ not to buy onions that are purple reddish in color. Buy the ones which are very light in color. Maybe, colorless ones........ and you will see that you dont cry much while cutting those types. Still..... whatever type of onions you try....... do, follow the first step. Take care......... and Enjoy Mylot...... :) http://hits4pay.com/members/index.cgi?baljeetam_saini

well votre amie, here is a tip that i read in the women's magazine, i am not pretty sure how it and does it really works, since i havent tried my hands at it, but if you are really interested you might probably check it out, hope it works well, it says peel onions, cut them into four and immerse them in a trough of cold water before you chop them finely. this way, your eyes will not water while chopping. best of luck and happy coooking

My Mom had an onion chopper. You put the onion in it, covered it with the lid and pressed down, and then you removed the chopped onion. It had several metal choppers and a spring. I do not know what it was called, but it has never gone out of style and there may be an electric version now.

Put the unpeeled onion in the freezer and leave it there for about 10 min. Put on soe sort of glasses. tears are caused by some sort of juices from the onion getting in your eyes and irritating them . Remove the onion from te freezer and peel it. The onion can now be sliced , chopped or minced without tears. If you use a sharp knife , there shouldn't be any tears. An onion makees u cry because acid is being released from the onion. Using a dull knife crushes the onion rather than cutting it., releasing far more of the acid in the air.

I am used to peeling onions. It like before chooping the onions,we have to peel the skins right. What i have read the best solution is to place a slice of lemon just below our nose,it is so that we are breathing and smelling the lemon at the same time while chopping the onions. Its not an easy way to do because how are we suppose to let the lemon stay below our nose?I ALSO have not try before,i just read it from a magazine.I think,we can have a string attached to the lemon and put it over our head and let it stay put below the nose. Its kind of funny if anyone do that.I can imagine how it looks..warkhaha! Another simple way that i usually do..it does help a bit..wears spectacles while doing the onions. Not that kind of spectacles that are normally used.Use spectacles that covers the eyes more..if more better, just use goggles..the one use during science experiment or if dont have one, goggles for swimming is much better! Hahahahaaaa

you can try to put a small piece of bread at the tip of the knife. they say it absorbs the excretion from the onion. i'm not sure how they thought of it, but it surely works for me. c',)

My eyes run like a faucet and I hate it. It seems like onions that are a bit 'aged' have the worst effect on me. I had heard to run them under water while you are cutting them, and have tried it, but it is as difficult as it sounds. I guess I'd rather have my eyes run than cut my hand. Great tip about the freezer, I will have to try to remember that one!

Someone told me to hold two sulfur matches in my mouth unlit while I cut onions and it would work? I have not tried it yet but some swear by it?? I really should try it and see if it works.

I agree CookieWookie that might work because unlit matches absorb odors. I know that some people lit matches and then unlit them and put them in the bathroom. It really absorbs the bad smells. Thank you CookieWookie!

Onion has a lot of good stuff in it so I think breathing in the smell must be healthy, it clears your nose and must be good for the lungs. If I have a cold, I usually cut an onion near the place where I sleep and it helps me breathe much better. I usually have my glasses on when I cut the onion and it has not caused any tears lately, so either the onion is weaker nowadays or I react less on it. Someone told me that it helps to keep your mouth open while cutting the onion, so that is one thing you could test.

I used to work in a restuarant where I had to do salad prep and I sliced onions everyday. I heard all types of ideas on this and I never really found any that helped. I have heard if you don't use white onions it helps.

I remember on a Rachael Ray show someone had suggested putting the onions in an ice bath for a few minutes just before cutting them. She said that nothing really works that great, but the guy that sent the video in swore by it...I personally buy my onions already chopped in the frozen section. I HATE chopping onions!LOL!

Ohh.. VotreAmie it's simple and instant. Do you use mustard oil? Then cut onion into two halves. apply a little mustard oil over inside area. You will never cry.
