Does anyone collect books? What types? Do you collect first editions?

I have a huge number of books, like many readers. However, I am not sure I would say that I "collect" books. I would be interested in hearing from people who do collect books. Anyone out there collecting first editions?

We have a lot of books at our house, but most of them are for my son. I had a lot more when I still lived at home, but books are too heavy and we didn't want to haul most of them. I think the only ones I brought with me were the books my grandma left me, my two Chonicles of Narnia sets, My Harry Potter books, and my Chicken Soup books. I left the rest of them at my parents' house. My mom has given some of them away (with my permission) and I think my sister has some at her house now, too. My grandma was a collector of books. I have some books that she gave me that are worth as much as a few hundred dollars each. She gave them to me before she went into a nursing home because she said I was the one who loved to read the most. She had over 5000 books in her library room in her house. She had to have the floor reinforced to hold them all. At one point she had even more books than that, too.

Your grandma sounds like one great lady. I sure do envy that library room of hers. It's nice that she passed down some of her books to you.

I don't collect books because they are first editions, but I do collect books I like. And I've had a number signed, so, to me, that adds to their value!

There is indeed something special about having the author dedicate the book or even just add the signature. I've given a lot of signed books away over the years, and people are always excited to see that the author signed the book.

Lots of folks I know collect cookbooks. I once had a garage sale, and the first thing to go was the cookbooks. I love to eat food from around the world, too. Have you read Anthony Bourdain's books...he combines travel and eating, the perfect combination.

Yes, I love first editions. I think they are something special, something different. I've started collecting some years ago, but it's an hard work to find out old books...

Yes, it's rare to stumble on them anymore because the folks who buy and sell first editions are always on the hunt. Every now and then you can run across something by accident, but it's getting harder and harder not to pay the big bucks for a first edition.

I don't collect first editions but I love books and to read them. I have a collection of books from Agatha Christie, George Simenon, Rex Stout, Sveva Casati Modignani, I wanted to have all but some of them I cannot find...

I have a HUGE collection of books, but I don't collect a specific "kind" of books. I have books dating back to the 1800's leading up to this year. The older ones are in several plastic crates with covers until I can get shelves built for proper displaying.

I adore books, I don't set out to colect them but they sort of group themselves and then start breeding I think! One day I have one book on a topic then a year later I have twenty. I try to buy second hand books where possible, I prefer books that have clearly been well used and enjoyed.

I'm collecting cookbooks but I never counted them, so I don't know how many I have. Up to 100, I guess. The gem of my collection is from 1903. As for another books, I have a nice collection also but there is no need and possibility to buy books anymore. A huge amount of titles is published every year, to buy everything I'd like to is quite expensive, and there's no place in my flat for them anymore. I'm working in a library and see almost every new book. If I decide after reading it's really something I would read many times more, I do it of course but it doesn't happen more than perhaps five times a year.

I'm not a collector, but there are a few authors I really like and always buy their new books in hardcover when they come out. Sometimes I'll buy copies of old editions at book sales, etc. if they're in good condition and especially if they have good illustrations in them.

I collect children's books. They are mostly, but not all, first printings and I've collected them for years. I also sell books for a living and it is very, very difficult for me to part with a children's book I like even if I bought it for resale....I just submitted an article to AC on collecting children's books. I figured I should write a little about what I know even if it is not exactly a hot topic.

Yes, we collect books. As a mom of two homeschooled children, I find that we have more books than just about anyone that I know. We have all kinds of books and we buy more about everytime that we go to a yard sale or flea market. Our school room is full and I am always looking for more places to put more books.

OMG--you're looking at a bibliophile here...do I have books you ask? I still do belong to a lot of books clubs and I really have to refrain from buying books..one cause I just don't always have the money anymore to be frank...but I have books on just about every subject you can imagine..I'm a great history buff, with tons of books on Ancient Egyptian, Greek cultures..also the medieval and renaissance periods...a lot of revolutionary and civil war books, then the sciences...anthropology, archeaology, astronomy, even physics...art books, photography...I also have a lot of recipe books...and a good number of fiction--mainly children/young adult books like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, etc...as far as adult fiction books..no...I usually get them out of the library...so do I have books...uh...yup--LOL Oh and yes do have a few first editions from the early 1900s

Even i would not say that i collect Books. I buy a lot of Books for reading..sometimes from the booksellers and sometimes from the hawkers in the street. I have accumulated a large number of books and have difficulty in disposing it because you don't get even 10% of the price you paid when you bought it most of the time.
