Battery farming of chickens should be illegal!

Very few people would be happy to see the conditions in which battery farmed chickens are kept caged. Usually these birds never see the light of day, have terrible injuries caused by their cage and cannot stand up by themselves. However, many people blindly buy economy chicken or cheap eggs and ignore the cruelty that has gone on. Its unneccessary when we can buy free range enggs and sensibly housed poultry. In the UK there is a petition going round to ask teh government to ban battery farming, you might want to sign if this is relevant to you http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/chicks/ For those of you not in the UK, do you care about the welfare fo teh chickens you eat, or do you not mind that they have lived in pain and suffering so you can have a cheap chicken burger? Do you think about the source of the meat you eat and would you like to see an end to battery farming all over the world?

We have always raised our own chickens until we moved to our new home and now we live too close to neighbors to have our livestock. I miss them very much. We always let our chickens Free Range. When you raise your own livestock, you know wht they have been eating and you know they have not beeen jacked up on steroids and they are treated with respect for life. It is sad the way chickens are raised commercially for sale.

Thank you for your information.I think it is cruel to the poultry and should be banned,in fact I have not eaten any fried chicken for long time,I do not want to eat some cheap fried chicken which have been creully treated. I would like to see the ban of battery farming, the chicken losses it s freedom, they cannot even move when they want but is resticted in a small space.

We buy a free range chicken from the farmer's market maybe once every two months, and its amazing how much further it goes than the poor flaccid supermarket chickens we used to sometimes buy many years ago. Yes, they cost twice as much, but they go at least three times as far and there is real 'muscle' on parts that are normally inedible on the battery hens. In teh long run its better for the flavour and the household economy to buy only free range birds. I like knowig that if I wanted I could go and visit the flock as well, I really feel its important to fully understand where our food comes from.

one of the first websites I came across when I was researching before getting our first chickens many years ago was one from the UK which depicted the horrors of battery farmed chickens. I do not think it is quite as bad here in the US, but certainly do believe the conditions of many commercial poultry growers leave a lot to be desired!

What is different in the US? I know the UK is much better than on the continent for example (legal cage sizes are bigger for one), it owuld be interesting to hear what the legal minimum conditions for chickens is in America.
