How many hours do you let your kids watch TV or play computers?

What is the limit you set in your homes for your kids to watch television or play computer games? As much as possible we try to limit our kids TV time to just a few hours to 4 hours a day, and we encourage them to play outside. Studies have shown that diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are linked to prolonged hours watching TV, which is probably because people spend less time doing outdoor physical activities. What is your opinion?

Hi Spasm! My daughter watched TV around, more or less, 4 hours a day. But it's not in a continuous mode. Happily she loves to go outside. And we have a large backyard where she can bike without worries. I think parents, should strive to make children more healthy and balanced indoor as well as outdoor activities. Because nowadays, young children already suffer from diabetes, hypertension and it's quite alarming. Therefore, parents should teach their children to have a healthy lifestyle. Have a great day Spasm! (^^,)

HI, thanks for the response! I believe i myself should show a good example since they usually see me in front of the computer working. But im changing that, every morning i make it a point to exercise, go for a walk or do stairclimbing (we have a tourist spot near our place which features stairs with more than 100 steps).

On school days we limit our daughter to 2 hours a day. On the weekends we allow her to watch alittle longer. We let her use the computer to play educational games or to write stories whenever she wants as long as her homework is done. We also make her play outside every day that the weather permits. She loves being outside.

Thanks for the response! our kids too like to play outside, but being a tropical country, there are lots of bugs so my son usually comes home with a lot of bug bites.

I agree with you,yes watching TV, sitting infront of computers for a long time leads to diabetes and hypertension but i allow my kids to watch TV only for 2hrs especially for cartoons or sometimes iallow them to watch kids movie and not more than that, as sitting infront of TV and playing games on computer for long time makes them lazy physically and even their eyes may get damage (eye sight),mareover they doesnot concentrate on their studies.

Thanks for the response! Lately though i noticed a potential problem. i have noticed in some neighborhoods the presence of computer shops which have mostly kids as customers. there they play online games or role-playing games, which are more often than not, violent. Aside from draining the parents' finances, they provide another avenue to just sit down and be lazy.

I do not have any children but I think it is important to control the time your children spnd on television and computers.May be it is better to let them to watct TV and play computer for 1 hour sp that they can do other things like sports, it is not good to sit in front of the television or computer for the whole day forthe children,it is better for them to stretch their hands and legs.

When my son gets home he does his homewirk first then he gets on the computer and plays games anywhere between thirty minutes or an hour depends on how good he is we treat the computer as a reward for him.

Hi, thanks for the response! We have tried limiting tv time for my daughter since she is the one going to school, and she is doing well in school and she is really obedient and does not complain when we tell her to turn off the tv or not play the computer. Its my son im worried about, but he still isnt going to school, he's just 2 years old. I hope we wont have a problem with him in this regard.

With the winter time, and not much outside time, I let my son use the computer quite often. It gave him something quiet to do, and he is actually learning some stuff from it. He's only 4, so even playing games, he's learing to read a few words, and problem solving. Now that the weather is nicer, I send him outside after school, and after dinner if he had a good day, he is allowed to play the computer.

Thanks for the comment! kids today sure have a lot of diversion, unlike before when we only had TV (not cable) and playing outside to pass the time.

I allowed approximately 3 hours a day. Normally they watch less than 2 hours as they preferred to play with their board game, toys, drawing and outdoor game like soccer, going to playground. I prefer them to playgame, reading instead of watching television or play computers.
