Do you think all inclusive hotels are a good or bad idea? Why?

Looking through a travel brochure showing holidays to trapical places in 2008 I noticed lots of all inclusive hotels. They are places where all meals, drinks and activity costs have aleady been paid for in the cost of the holiday. The holiday makers stay in the hotel grounds. Would you stay in an all inclusive hotel? Why? Are they are a good idea or not? Why?

First of all, travelers do not need to stay on the hotel grounds. I have stayed in more than one all inclusive and several times have taken day trips into the town or a nearby site. Those that stay at the hotel, the entire time, are missing out on some wonderful things. That being said, an all inclusive does have it's place. You don't have to worry about carrying around money that might be lost or stolen. You don't have to worry about planning any activities you might want to do because they have staff to do that. If you are in a country where eating at a local restaurant might be risky due to poor water or food quality, you will be safe eating at the all inclusive. It's a travelers choice based on what the hotel offers. But don't stay at the hotel the entire time. Get out and see the country.

Depends on what they include in the package. If they only include the meal then it is ok. I just do not like if they include any activities e.g free spa treatment or free snorkeling.. those that i won't be interested.

I think it is good to stay in the inclusive hotels as you can have a better planning on your budget in accomodation. Travellers do not need to prepare for the unknown costs for the food, drinksand other activity costs as rhey are included whivh make them easier to plan before the journey.
