It really is ridiculous isn't it? Society punishes people who want to live within their means and don't like being in debt, and reward those who spend more than they can afford, and get over their heads in debt - owing a company hundreds of pounds gives them a hold over you I suppose, which they like. It's a kind of power thing, I guess, as well as gaining the interest they charge you. If you're in the UK, there are a number of things you can do to get a credit rating. 1. Get a phone landline in your name (I wouldn't advise this one if you don't want BT to extort ridiculous amounts from you, but it does give you a landline, and that adds to your credit rating. 2. Get your name on the electoral register. 3. Open a Littlewoods account (they tend to limit the amount of credit they give you, but will give credit to just about anyone, regardless of credit rating) and buy something over 12 months by direct debit. 4. Utilities bills in your name paid up to date should give you a positive credit rating - pre-pay meters won't. I hope these pointers will help get you on the credit ladder! All the best, and don't spend too much - it's not how much you borrow, it's paying it off each month that counts!

Do you belong to a bank? Establish your self with a bank by setting up a checking and or savings account. An established customer should have no problem getting a credit card through the bank. Is there some one who can co sign an application for you. Find a family member or a friend who has good credit and they can be your co applicant. It will show up on both thiers and your credit report, but it will be an easy way to establish credit. Once you have done that, you can get a credit card on your own and then close the one with the co applicant, so they don't have to worry about it for long. Good luck to you.
