Skipping Rope

I was thinking about how when I was a child and we would skip rope either alone or with others. Now I don't mean the double dutch thing. Just your basic old two handed, one rope type of deal. One song we would sing would be "One, two, buckle my shoe, walkie, talkie, bluebells, peppers". Peppers would be the cue to swing the rope very fast. Anyone remember good old fashioned jumping rope?

Sarina, Kids still jump rope in our area. A few years ago I was donated a couple cases of jump ropes to distribute to my low income families. I was amazed at how happy the kids were. I figured that the jump rope days were long gone. They are not long gone. Kids still enjoy it and they sing the same little songs. LOL It was a great experience to see and hear the kids excitement at jumping rope.

In nice weather you would always see kids out jumping rope or playing hopscotch. I rarely see that anymore.

Sure. I was fascinated by the other children who could jump so well until the count of 100 nonstop. I loved jumping rope. Until now I have a jump rope and this time I use it for exercise. As children, my sisters, my friends and I played a lot of those jump rope games you talked about . One I remember is "Down in the valley where the green grass grows, there lived a pretty maiden as sweet as a rose. Along came a stranger and kissed her on the cheek. How many kisses did he give her?" Then the fast turning of the rope for "One, two, three!" There were still others like "Rich man, poor man, beggarman, a thief.." but I think one of the more exciting way the jump rope was used was for Limbo Rocking!!!

i do remember the best times in skipping rope... you can be in groups, or you can just skip rope alone. it was better though if you skip with your friends and take turns.

Oh yes I remember the good old skipping rope and use to do get out on my front verandah and have such a wonderful time with my skipping rope, also my father used to make my children go out side every morning when we visited them and make all of my children skip with their skipping ropes as it is very good for their health and making them breath more better as four of my children were asthmatics.

There's a blast from the past, LOL. I remember jumping rope all the time as a kid and now my granddaughter is teaching me those all over again. But I'm not into jumping anymore cuz' it jolts the body too much at my age, lol. I do hold the rope now though. I noticed that most of the jumping ropes are plastic now, hmmmmm.

That one brought back a memory or two! I recall the first time I watched someone double Dutch. I wanted so badly to try it. But, nobody knew how to do it.

I remember, we used to have a lot of fun with our jump ropes, hula hoops and such. It was great exercise and fun at the same time. I never could get the hang of the hula hoop though.

I spent hours thrashing my hips about to get that blasted hoop spinning. I loved the sound of it.

I do remember that we could spend hours with a jumprope and of course, the trapezee bar on the swing set was our second favorite. I don't know why kids these days can't be active like that. That is probably the biggest reason that American kids are fat. I just bought my daughter a jump rope a couple of days ago. She loves it! We also pay hopscotch occasionally. Where are the good old days??

My grandson was drawing and made a hopscotch. I was thrilled that he knew what it was. He said they play it at school. I thought it was long lost.

I sure do remember. Almost everyday on the playground we would be jumping rope. I was always the slowest one. Some of those girls were really fast and could keep up with the ones who were turning the rope as fast as they could. I also remember playing hopscotch, and simon says. I think little kids play that now, but we were still playing it in 2nd and 3rd grade. It's funny I don't remember any of the jump-rope songs.

I remember jumping rope. I thought about one day not to long ago. I thought to myself that was great exercise so I went out and bought myself and adult jump rope. I came home all excited and ready to work off some calories. Guess what jumping rope was awhole lot easier when I was a kid. So the rope is in the drawer and hasnt seen the light of day in awhile. Maybe I'll give it another go soon.

Looking back,I realize I could have been a gold-medal winner at the Olympics if they had an event for the slowest skipper in the world. My ability was like around 20 skips a minute without tripping myself.I chose the grass as the pavement got awefully hard after awhile. But scenes like me attempting to skip rope is what memories are made of.

Oh what a sweet memory! I had three girlfriends on the block that I lived on and we would have Jump Rope marathons to see who could jump the longest with out making a mistake or falling. We made up our songs, we would bring our little tiny transistor radios outside and try to jump to the music. Boy I wish I could do that now..... now I am afraid I would be hurting pretty bad LOL things are larger now amd not quite as firm if you get my drift. But it is sure good exercise. I see them do it at the Gym! Thanks for the walk down memory lane :)

I used to love jumping rope. I remember we had jump rope marathon type things to raise money for heart disease when I was in school. My kids love it, too. We had a children's safety fair today that we went to and they each got a little jump rope. They have been playing all day with them. My fat 36 yr old butt tried to jump some and I thought I would die after just 8 or 9 jumps! LOL

oh yes.i was okay at the single rope..but i sucked at double dutch.just couldn't get co-ordinated enough. they had some other thing at my school too-it was like a gigantic rubber band they put at the bottom of their ankles-you jumped it like jumprope, but also made patterns with it-i'm not sure the name of it.
