Like everyone else I was shocked and saddened about the tragedy on the campus of Virginia Tech where a gunman killed 32 people and then himself. I want in no way to diminish the seriousness of that act and the waves of grief we feel.
However, when the President declared that the White House flag and all government buildings flags would be flown at half mast for the rest of the week I had to wonder about the families of the men and women being killed in wars. Why don't we fly our flags at half mast every day that one of our military men or women is killed in combat?
I think we need to look at that and consider what it really means to honor our fallen heroes.
What do you think?

While I agree that the tradegy at VA Tech was horrifc, and I also do not wish to diminish the seriousness of it....I completely agree that enough is not done to show our troops that we support them and truly care about the men and women who are in combat.....many of whom will be hurt or killed. I believe that we should fly our flag at half-mast anytime we are at war.
As the wife of a Disabled Vietnam Veteran.....I know the difficulties that many of our miitary experiences when they return home.
Thank you for this discussion...I hope it gives people something to think about!

Thank you. We need to provide more honor to all veterans, and we need to have the consequences of war in our line of vision, not ignored or swept aside.
Thank you for being there for one of our Vietnam heroes.

Thank you for awarding me with the "best response"....I truly appreciate it.
I felt that this was a topic that needed to be discussed and something that we all need to think about.

You are right. the flag should be flown 1/2 mask each day, until all the service man and women are home

I do think that what you suggest here is a good idea but at the same time I do think that this is a SPECIAL honor for those who were tragically killed through a horrific circumstance that was beyond their control and one that was unexpected and untimely.

Absolutely. My only issue is that the President could be honoring our military personnel on a daily basis while we are at war. It is too easy for us to put their sacrafices out of our minds.
