Do you need a skill to enter in online marketing

Why I asked this question?because I had my friend that confessed he had never to became a businessman by selling his first e-book online and generated thousands of income but he did. He has no skills knowledege about how to get success in online marketing but what I saw is opposite. Do we need that skill?
