I got a feeling it is a learned response from what society considers as "nice". As a pre-adolescent, I was not aware of the female form, I knew a face I thought was nice, but that was usually determined by the look they had in their eyes.
Then lads would be lads and I remember some of my friends saying things like, "Cor! look at her figure" or words to that effect LOL... At first I couldn't see what these friends were talking about, but then suddenly I started seeing these georgious shapes. They had always been there, but I was only now getting "tuned in".
It seems that it is in our culture to view the physical looks, but there is a lot more to a person of course and the physical beauty seem to vanish if the character is bad. Some cultures view beauty in a different way of course.

agreed, but my difficulty is how does the perception of beauty change both between cultures and oer time? Doesnt it suggest we have no free will at all?

for sure it is deep and abstract. However, maybe this is the essence of us?

I guess we are EsKaren but I always say not all People that are beautiful on the Outside are beautiful on the Inside but this is not something that People will look at and believe me I have met a lot of People that are beautiful on the outside but not so much on the Inside

i certainly agree with the inside - outside debate. However, i am interested how we construct notions of beauty on the outside

I think the determination of beauty is both a personal thing although it is somewhat socially determined. In Africa there are women with their necks extended by rings and in that culture that is considered beautiful. Some people think tatoos are beautiful. Tatoos if properly placed can be attractive but for me I consider such things as body art intrusive. It's more what's on the inside of a person that counts most. I know people that I feel are physically beautiful but they have some of the worst personalities that I know of.

i think it is now well established fact that beauty is more to do with the person than what they look like, however i still question to what extent we are told what to see as beautiful

I believe that physical beauty is the first that people notice. Simply because we instantly know that one is beautiful simply by looking at her. But when we get to know the person that's when we see the inner beauty of the person.

i agree, but is the idea of physical beauty truely objective? if so, why does it change over time and between cultures?
Thank you for your response

actually.. the word 'beautiful' itself can refer to many parts and many things.. so.. you're asking how do we actually judge a girl.. by the look.. or the body shape? .. i think we have to separate the body parts to make such judgement.. i can say that she has a pretty body.. but not a pretty look..i can also say that she has a pretty look.. but an average body.. isn't that true? i think most of the people are socially conditioned.. we follow what others think.. that's why it's called the trend.. not many actually have their own opinions on how to judge a person.. don't you think so? :)

i do agree that very few of us are confident enough to make a decision about someones looks without going along with what someone else thinks. An old friend of mine once said, when i want your opinion, i will give it to you. This is a good maxim for life
blessed be
