Home Cooking for Pets Is Suddenly Not So Odd.

5 months ago my discussion “Are you unintentionally poisoning your dog?” was not popular at all. I also respond to many discussions about feeding dogs with “people food” and I was told that I am wrong. Over 60 brands recall makes me feel than I was right and no longer feel like I was obsessed. I feel so sorry for all dogs and dog’s owners to learn about with pain and suffer. Will you cook for your dog or cat?

My dogs get fed dry dog food twice a day. On the other hand, we don't throw our food away either. Any leftovers that aren't going to be reheated or that gets left out overnight, gets fed to the dogs. They eat everything. They get it all except for anything too sweet. And since I have 3 dogs who are as picky as kids(which I also have 3 of) there are things they don't like. Guen likes tomatoes, Spoof likes lettuce, and Guen and Maxx like bananas. Mostly we stick to meat, potatoes, pasta and rice. They also like assorted cooked and raw veggies. I don't cook for them necessarily, but they do eat what I cook. Spoiled brats. I don't think it's wrong, my dogs are incredibly healthy. The only drawback is the begging and the expectancy they have when people are eating. But they are pretty well behaved.

I agree with you polachicago. We always feed our pets home cooked meals. We do keep some canned and dry food, but only use it for emergancies.

While it is beneficial at this time to make your animals their own food instead of buying it, I do not think it is good to make this a permanate thing, for making your own food the animal is missing certain crucial nutrients that they need. I am not saying you are wrong for you are not it is just in my opinion to just use it as a temporary fix for now. My neice is a verternarian for large and small animals and I have talked with her in great lenghths on this matter and that is how I have come to my opinion.

It is not hard to learn how to cook for animals. I cook base on nutrition knowledge same as mass production is using for years. However, mass food industry is using ingredients that are not good for pets at all.

you could always give them left over chinese food that you can't finish or forgot at the back of the feige, i used to work at a chinese resturant alot of people ask for left over food for their pets, may sounds odd but save alot of money in the long run too.

i doubt that cooked food we people eat can harm a dog in any way...i used to feed my dog while i eat (some pieces of meat here and there) then i give him the food we cook plus rice.

The food that had to be withdrawn was contaminated with melamine. I am not sure what that is. I think cooking for our pets is a good idea. They probably require the same nutrients as humans do. I am going to do a little research of their needs and think I will do the same as you.

Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain. For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat.

I know a lot of people who feed their animals raw, and frankly I thought they were crazy, but, with the recent problems with the commercial food, I think they have the right idea. I'm thinking of going raw for my animals also. At least I know where the food is from, and I can eliminate the whole manufacturing process.

my dogs don't like raw meat, but they like raw fish...I cook meal that has 20% of meat, 40% white rice and 40% vegetable. My dogs like raw peppers, and cabbage. They like nuts and dry fruits...

When we had our dog, we used to give her some of whatever we were eating for dinner. We did have some regular dog food though too that she liked, so she would have some of that too. My sister in-law feeds their cat turkey all the time. lol

hi my dear friend nice to read from you again...I don't have either a cat or a dog, but I am not in favour of spending so much money for their food...I don't think they need special food..I think this is only another way of forcing us to buy expensive things...they were brought up eating what their owners had for years and they were well bread...so yes if I had one I think I would either prepare something for my cat or dog or share a bit of my food with them if apt for them...of course they need any possible care and attention but I think that there is too much talk about the right brand of pet food...maybe I am wrong because I don't have a pet...

Well i never thaught about it, but now when you started discussing it. We do latly give natz cooked meals. I know it seems a bit strange. But he is a little dog with many stomach problems, and althaugh we tried to feed him with a dogli dry food, he gets sick because of it often. So we just stopped now, and we try cooking for him and seeing what kind of food will be good for him. strange but true.:)

For me i really cook food for my dog. When they were small i buy them dog foods but now table food can do. I even cook food for them. Pets like dogs are like human they have emotions, if you ov er feed them with any food you might kill them. There are foods that can be given to them. Remember be emotionally affectionate to them they are like us.

animals have the same consciousness as our human being, they can get hungry, but they can't make by them.so the dog as you pet,you have the duty to cook food for your pets.i think you can read some knowledge from books what you pet want to eat.

before we used to feed our dogs with canned food. but because it now very expensive we opeted to feed them table food. at first the avoid eating those but canned food is no longer available, they became hungry and were forced to eat it. till now, they are being fed with table food and if to compare it with the usual dog food, i say that i am fooled by it. we've been spending a lot for them everyday, and yet, table food gives them the same energy. and in fact more. i dont know bout you guys. but our dogs are healthy and they are doing fine. so i dont see the point of buying canned foods. it really spoils the monthly budget. try to allot the money for grooming your dog instead. ;)

I understand your point, but I don't think I will cook for our tabby. We just have to be careful what food we give her... and hopefully things will be fine...

There is no government agency setting quality standards and guidelines, so there are no assurances of quality in pet food.

I've had a cat. She always gets a cooked food. Her favorite is steamed fish :) I also give her canned food but several times a month only. But now she's gone. I miss her so much.
