The longest they could wait the better. I've colored my hair for the first time when i was about 16, and have done it a few times afterwards. For me, it ruined my hair, thinning it even more than it already was. So i'd try to make my kids not color their hair, but if they really really wanted to, i guess around 16 would be fine.

I think it depends on the persons hair, thats a big factor...of course as well as how often they do it, how well they take care of it and how long they leave the bleach in AND what type of products they use....some hair IMO is just too fine/delicate to be dying really...Luckily for myself and my kids we all have thick strong hair...plus we only bleach and/or dye our hair every 6-8 months or so which makes a huge difference.....

yes my son has really thick hair and it does grow fast so i think that it might be alright and not dry out like mine does because i have colored it many times.

I first let my son get his hair bleached when he was 10...same with my daughter...The first time my boy got his done, it was done in a salon but now I just do it for them and let them have Manic Panic in it...

I think once they become teenagers its ok. Their identity is so important to them. Some like to blend in and some like to stand out. My son used to like to try different haircuts. He would draw a head on paper, and tell me what he wanted me to do. We would go outside, I would have the clippers and would carve his head, per his instructions. He had several mohawks, he never did dye his hair though. Here is a funny story. He wanted his initials on his head. Well he didn't want to wait until I got home, he looked in the mirror and did it himself. Well when he got out of the mirror the initials were backwards, ooops.

I think that when they are teens it is ok, but not before then. My little girl is in 3rd grade and I see quite a few kids in her class with dyed hair. I wouldn't let my 8 year old dye her hair, I think that it is way too young. One girl had her hair streaked in grade 1.

I also think that first grade is a little young, i thought around 13 or so at least my son is almost 15 that it was ok.

Sure I would at 14- My daughter is 10 and wants highlights-- She has curly hair and wants straight hair-- I'm thinking of taking her this summer to get it straightened and highlighted for the new school year- She is entering the Middle school (a big 6th grader) why not have a new look. I'm not sure the cost of hair straightening. Hopefully it won't break me- : )
So I think 11 would be fine to highlight hair- I think I would make her wait to color it-
Man when I was a kid I always wanted dark hair-- I have dirty blonde-- My mom never let me- Never! I constantly color it now!

They should be proud of who they are without having to change their hair. I think it would depend on the parents, I have heard some parents say that their child should not color their hair until 18 years old, and some parents color their child's hair as a 3 year old! I think that hair dye is a chemical and it should not be used unless really neccessary. Since most teens just want to experiment I think the older the age the better because it can be addicting. I think hair cut experimenting is better than hair coloring, but I believe it is up to the parent to decide what age is right for his/her child. Have a nice day.

I have colored my kids hair too. But they were 13 and 14 years old when I started allowing them to do it. But I have to admit...that the blue and purple was only during summer. That was because their schools do not allow any other hair color that is not "natural".
As you know, I have purple hair. And I have had purple hair for 5 years now.
I see nothing wrong with having purple or blue hair. :)
But for some reason, the schools here frown on it.
So, I have promised my kids that I will color their hair this summer again.

I've let all 3 of my kids do it. I feel like this... if they're old enough to ask for it and feel comfortable with it (even if it's a freaky color) and I remind them before it's done that whatever they do they may get comments and stares from & they'll have to probably keep it for 4-6 weeks for even temp coloring (some are less) then go for it.
If the biggest "issue" you have with your teen is what color or how long or how short their hair is... thank the Lord for being kind to you. To me, this isn't even worth a fight over. Just my thought.

As long as it is temporary then I would do it when they were curious and for at home. Again the wash out kind. My daughter is a teen and since we have done that she is not so apt to want to color it now. She has become a quite nice individual that does not care what other kids do. Good luck with yours. Coloring is not a big deal.

Yeah it will wash out in a few weeks, also his hair grows fast so that is also a plus.

I let my 16 year old daughter colour her hair. When my first daughter was 16 I let her do hers also. When she was 18 she was dyeing her hair herself though sometimes it didn't do to well. She came to me in tears with green hair. I have no idea what she did to make it go like that but I had to re-dye it as she looked rather strange lol.

I started at 14 and that was many years ago. I think it was the only area where myparents were liberal. The way I see it, hair color is temporary...as long as it is not done too often..it is fine. Plus it can be fun.
I would love to try purple hair...even for only a few days.

Well fortunately I have not had to deal with this situation as of yet,but I would probably okay it maybe around the teenage years.I might not have to deal with it at all though because my daughter thinks it's fantastic being a blonde:)
