True or false? The internet has made our world today a much smaller place &

Internet Connection - connecting us around the world
United States

we are mainly better off with the ability to be in contact just about any where in the world using our "connection" via the internet? While so many find fault immediately with the net, I tend to see it for all the good it's brought. People who normally would never in their life have the opportunity to travel and experience the world and all thats in it now are able to be in contact around the world and see various places via their connection! Do you think the world is a better place because of the internet?

The internet has made the world a much much much smaller place. I am able to becme extremely close to people in Russia, for example. I met my best friend Svetlana on line. She and I have been able to share ideas and thoughts beyond my wildest dreams. If it wasn't for the internet we would not have been able to meet and connect!

It is amazing! People you would have never in a lifetime had the opportunity to meet you now have available at the touch of a button!

I have to disagree. Speaking to someone from Russia is not the same as going to Russia. Yes, you may be able to engage in discussion with people across the globe, but it's not the same as actually meeting them. So I guess it's a double-edged sword. Some people who never get out are exposed to things they might not see otherwise. But it also encourages people not to get out and actually see the world. People, especially in the US are becoming more and more closed off. A relationship on a computer is not a real relationship.

True. Without Internet there wouldn't be myLot for example. It's the best place for people from any part of the world to come together, there we can learn so much about each other. When I joined last November, I was spending hours there, just reading and wondering about diversity of the world, about the different ways the people think etc. Now I'm more occupied with my friends' discussions and my interests. Hopefully with learning to know each other better we will understand each other better too, and the world will become a better place to live in, without prejudice, hate etc. Dreaming allowed LOL!

I hear ya loud and clear! Wouldn't it be great if this device could be one of the reasons why people started actually understanding and accepting the differences instead of jumping on them and hating? If some people would take the blinders off and see we are all Gods children with the same make up and perhaps a different route to get there I think we'd be a lot happier people!

Yes I do. I can find the answer to any question in an instant, I can "talk" to friends half way across the world, I can educate myself on any subject, I can meet people who I would never have dreamed of meeting, the list is endless.

Yes, the internet has made the world a much smaller place. All of this was made possible because of a man named Tim Berners-Lee who created the first web browser in 1990 called the World Wide Web. Back then only a few people had access. Then along came Bill Gates who made it possible for thousands if not millions of users worldwide to have access to the internet, by making computer programs more readily available, first with the Micro Soft series and now the Windows series. To a lesser extent, the Apple Macintosh also participated, lesser because not too many people own Macs but, most everyone has a PC.

I think the internet of today has made everyone very lazy and hermit like. We don't have to really leave our homes anymore for anything. Just hop on the computer and you can manage anything from it. From paying bills to shopping.

I think it is a better world. Besides what you say, there is also the posibility to have a world with more freedom. Everyone with a connection to internet can give his or her opinions (unfortunately, in some countries there are restrictions to do it, even with internet).

i believe it has its good and its bad. good for what you said, and for alot of people who need it for work purposes, but look at all the bad too, like stealing peoples identies. just like anything, good with the bad.

Young people don't think anything of saying they have friends in countries their parents considered far away. With VOiP and voice chat online, we can talk to anyone anywhere for virtually nothing. Yes, the world is much smaller, and on the whole, much better.

False. I don't think the internet has made our world a much smaller place. I say it's true thst we have the ability to be in contact with other parts of the world with the internet connection. I find this to be a fascinating aspect of the internet. I also love the fact that you have the means to seek out information at your fingertips. I only regret the internet technology didn't exist when I was a kid in school. The children in today's society is so blessed to have the computer as a learning tool in their schools.

The world is small with or without the Internet. I don't see any problem in the easy connections worldwide. If there would be more minuses and less pluses may be the Internet would never be invented. But as you can all see life without it is not the same. I agree that now destinations doesn't seem so far as before, but getting to know the world better doesn't make it smaller but bigger because now you learn more and more about things you haven't thought of before. Which is better - to be well informed and easily connectible or to be unfoundable and can't share that much information.

yes.. i do agree with you.. and in fact.. it's very true.. without internet.. i don't think we from other countries can actually chat with one another.. exchanging ideas and so on.. imagine the life without internet.. we're far left behind.. don't you think so? now that we can actually be friends even though we're from different countries.. we get to introduce our own culture.. and we should be proud because someone know about our culture..it also help us to obtain latest news on other countries.. it does make a world a smaller place.. in my point of view =)

The world is certainly a different place, whether it is better or not I'm not sure. I would like to think it is, we all have such different cultures and accepting other nationalities is very difficult when it can seem so alien to your own. If we could all learn to like, if not love others, and accept them for the way they are, then the world would definitely be a better place. It has so much to offer, when I go on holiday it is nice to see the way other people live but whether I could adapt to that way of life is a question I often ask myself.
