the main difference is that we can carry laptops with us wherever and we cant with desktops as their name implies. if we see in the hardware side we can upgrade anything for desktops but where as laptops there is a limit and the price is also very high.

Most of the desktop computers are compatible as they are made with certain standards of IBM . So they are IBM compatible personal computers . Unfortunately , Laptops are not much compatible with each other as there is no particular standards followed . We may not get the compatible hardware devices in the market for Laptops ...

A desktop pc is a pc that you keep in your home and mainly in one place, eg on a desk. A laptop pc is one that you can take with you and is mobile, and you can use anywhere, thats why its called a laptop.

Not all removable hardware is compatible. Memory is a good example. The memory for the laptop is like the half width of the same desktop memory. Also, most of the components in a laptop are on the motherboard to save space. There is also often a difference between laptop and desktop CPU. The former need to function with less power and be colder than the latter.

as per as working in concern there is no as such diffrence we can do same work on both. due to some facilities laptops are taking place of desktops these days such as compact size, u can roam any where along with ur laptop which in case of desktop may not be possible desktop is generaly connected to ups which can give u only few minutes backup where as u can work on lap top at any place any time even if there is elecric failure or non availablity of electricity. u can't use desktop if its thundring showers out side but working on alaptop is safe.these are few good features of laptops which are making them popular these days

We have one of each at home and theyr run identical software. We also have them linked on a wireless LAN so we can share files and use the same printer etc. THese days there is usually very little difference between the two unless you need something unusual.
