Without looking it up, can you tell me the meaning of mendacity? The word appears in the movie 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof'. I love the movie. It's one of my favorites. For those who have seen the movie do you remember what it means?

I am not really sure but I think that i would use it to some one that was clearly deceptive in there words. I did not see the movie so I do not know how it was used.

I didn't think anyone would ever reply to this one tammyr. Thanks for breaking the ice. Mendacity is defined as 'lies'. The movie is a classic. You would enjoy it. Thanks again.

No musical tammyr. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof stars Burl Ives, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. It's the story of a wealthy land owner (Burl Ives) who made a fortune. He's a self made man. The story takes place in the middle 50s. Paul Newman as Breck marries Elizabeth Taylor who plays Maggie. Paul is a local football hero who depends on his best friend. I forget his name. Rumor has it that Maggie sleeps with the football guy (but it's not true)and that caused her and Breck to have serious marital problems. Big Daddy (Burl Ives) ends up with terminal cancer and is told on his birthday. It's very dramatic and of course with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, one of their best performances. It's worth watching if you like old movies.

Movie - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Elizabeth Taylor excellent performance. She is beautiful in this movie
I love Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Mendacity has to do with lieing. But I am trying to remember how it was used in the movie and where you are going with this.

I just wondered if anyone could remember the movie and that word. I love the movie and have seen it thousands of times. Burl Ives (Big Daddy) used it a lot after Breck, (Paul Newman) used it when he and Big Daddy were argueing. Then Big Daddy walks into the room after coming up from the basement and said to Breck, "Do you smell it Sister Woman? Sister Woman says, "Smell what?" Big daddy, "Do you smell the smell of mendacity?" Sister Woman, " Well, I don't even know what that is." Big daddy looks at Breck and asks him if he smells it. Breck smiles and tells Big Daddy he smells it all right. Big Daddy says mendacity is covering the room. The unmistakable smell of lies. I laugh everytime I watch it. It's just awesome! I'm not going anywhere with it. I just like the movie?
