Mainframe computers generally require special attention and are kept in a controlled atmosphere. They are multi-tasking and generally used in areas where large databases are maintained e.g. government departments. They can cost a million or more. For this reason... many companies are leasing them rather than buying them. The company also need to pay something like $50.000 a year for maintenance in case something happen to it. Only the supplier has the technicians to repair a mainframe. Hewlett Packard used to be a main supplier of main frames... but they stopped making them. I believe IBM and Linuxcare also makes Mainframes.
