I apologize for this duplicate message. I have also posted this message under the cancer heading. But I am trying to reach the largest number of responses so I can have this information as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
What is acute leukemia? I realize it is the worst type of leukemia. But what more can you tell me about it? What are the stages of progression to death? A good friend has just been diagnosed with it...she previously had other forms of cancer which were all in remission but then this. We don't know/understand if this has come from one of the other forms. We also would like to know more about the various stages. The doctor was not very helpful today. He was very concerned about her getting her affairs in order...which we do understand the short termness, but we are very curious as to what to be watching out for. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Whilst I don't know a great deal about acute leukemia, I do know about cancer in general.
It could either have come from her original cancer, if there were still cancer cells lurking in her system. OR, if it could be a completely different form of cancer.
This is because cancer is a failure of the immune system.
So, it is not unusual for a [person to get more than one type of cancer, especially if their immune system is weak.

I don't know how old your friend is, and I don't know a lot about adult forms of leukemia, but my 6 year old son was diagnosed with AML leukemia two days after his 4th birthday. AML Leukemia is the most aggressive and acute forms of childhood leukemia. This type of the cancer requires much stronger and more aggressive forms of treatment than other types of the disease do. It has a better cure rate, though. My son is in remission, and has been cancer free for a little over 2 years now, though. One of the biggest dangers in a leukemia patient is infection; this is because the immune system of the person is compromised by both the leukemia cells in the blood (they replace the normal white blood cells that fight infections) and the chemo treatments. I know that adult forms of this type of cancer are harder to cure than the childhood version; I will keep you and your friend in my prayers. Don't give up. You can also go to Web MD for more information on the disease. They have a lot of useful information about symptoms, treatment, etc. Good Luck.
